Sleep to Sing, 19APR
God gives many gifts, a gift most vital to our health, physically and emotionally, is sleep. Like in computer systems, God gives “soft reboots” in the form of naps and “hard reboots” in the form of solid, peaceful REM sleep…
Another major gift from God is singing…
The birds… The birds are singing this peaceful 4 AM on my quiet road. God must wake them up early to sing HIS praises before it is light enough for them to see… They can’t gather food at this hour, they can’t watch out for predators either, so they simply roost – and sing. They sing the most BEAUTIFUL song of the morning… the rest of the world is quiet, and so they can hear each other. God provides for even the littlest birds because He loves them immensely and wants then to sing HIS praises.
God wakes me up too… I was awakened with music on my brain, the same song that was being expressed by my heart last night as I exhaustedly drifted off to sleep…Morning brought my inner singing back to that song of praise… He bookended my six beautiful hours of deep sleep with song… I have no complaints about only six hours, I get what I get, so I don’t begrudge God anymore for walking me up to sing – or to write -or to be HIS ears to hear and especially to appreciate the birds and all that He holds in HIS hands.
Anyway… surely if God takes care of the littlest sparrow, He will take care of us, right? Yes, in Matthew 6 Jesus speaks of the birds to teach us about God’s LOVE for us – “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?… …Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” verse 26-27, 34
“Sacrifice” is the song praising thru in my head since last week, “Praise to You, to YOU Lord!”… It’s a recent addition to my head filled with praise band music, a song that seems to drive me to clapping in praise even though I am NOT a clapper – if anything, I am a praise drummer… I have no idea what to do with my hands when I sing… Often I clench my fists and close my eyes to channel my excessive energy and intense love of God into focus SO I don’t forget and mess up my role – some songs I raise in praise, some praise as a cheer to how GREAT God is, some praise as a surrender to God’s Will… At least in the car when I sing I have to hold onto the steering wheel with my hands – JUST like I hold onto God and let HIM move my wheels… If I don’t dare let go of the steering wheel, well I certainly shouldn’t dare to let go of God!!!
That’s surrendering as a goal, letting God move my wheels… Giving up my will for HIS…. As the song goes I am asking, “turn my heart towards YOU a thousand times a day”… It’s a marvelous feeling to give it up to God – to desire to be “ALL IN” as our guest sermonist preached last Sunday. It sometimes hurts to sacrifice because I have to drop my life agenda, but surely it is better for Him to take over, and recently He has made it clear that He saved me even more pain when I began listening to Him.
And that’s a good thing, that’s a God thing, He made this world, He made us to love us, He allows the birds to sing without fear in the predawn, He reminds them to go home when the sun dips. He takes them under His wing. He wants them to have a chance to sing HIS praises. He wants us to sing too…
Even the stork in the sky
knows her appointed seasons,
and the dove, the swift and the thrush
observe the time of their migration.
How very often a praise song populates my head when it exudes out of my heart… Always to be blessed by song brings soulful PEACE to sorrowful times, and brings exuberant joy to triumphant times…
The other song in my head is “Let There Be Peace On Earth” the organ postlude at church on Sunday… it’s a song that I sing with one of my nursing home friends Joe.. it means EVERYTHING.. “Let peace begin with me”… that is God’s desire… blessed are the peacekeepers for they shall be called children of God.
The bird’s gift of song is ours to share too, observe their gifted time of PEACE, and then we ourselves can search for God to slide under His wing too. He “brings forth our songs of praise” is another of my favorite song lyrics. God brings stillness and PEACE.
Sleep reboot is just like singing reboot… Singing refreshes our souls… Let your song of love sing out to all you come across… Share God’s LOVE.
Hold onto God and let HIM move your wheels.. don’t dare let go of the steering wheel… DON’T let go of God.
Add song to reboot your soul. Let God bring you PEACE.
“Sacrifice”, Paul Balouche
Man looks on the outside
You look on the heart
That’s where my worship has to start
Words fall short to tell You
Yearnings that I feel
I want to worship You for real
To truly live for You
To truly seek Your face
To turn my heart towards You
A thousand times a day
For all eternity
With every breath I take
I want my life to be
A sacrifice of praise
A sacrifice of praise to You
