RISING OUT of the Tomb(s) – Matthew 27:50-53

Standard

NO FOOLIN – Sometimes we see the light but we’re still sitting in the dark. Sometimes life goes on with us questioning. Sometimes we will never know what we won’t know.

And No Foolin – there are confusing parts of scripture too – and we are left to ponder but as long as we just believe – we will understand in whole LATER – even if only in PART now.

On Sunday, Easter Sunday, I heard a seasoned preacher scholar say that we DON’T know why Matthew records that many people were raised but we have NO OTHER INFO…  Hmmm… That scripture freaks people out…  and we don’t know anything more after – like ‘did they go back in?’????

I know that for Jesus’s Rising, the tomb was not empty having been robbed by others, but was the result of Jesus robbing His grave – robbing sin and death of its victory. And I know scripture helps us in understanding the ‘gravity’ of the grave with the real death of Him – the real separation from God to take those sins way far away – and to re-bring us back to God – to tear that curtain and no longer have us experience separation from God.

But when I read about the people also raised from the dead, a startling piece confuses – it says they were raised when Jesus died but that they left the tombs when Jesus did…  In other words, I think that this is saying that they were still still saturday…  and then on the move sunday…  us too… the ‘moving’ required the Spirit of the Lord to move them – the life returned but the living was Jesus-driven…  (or at least the angels kept those tomb stones from rolling too early…)

I don’t know – but I do know that if I was alive in the grave, then I would probably be needing Jesus too – to tell me what to do and when to go…  I wonder if we could do that in the grave then can we do that now – not in the grave – could we await Jesus’s instructions now?!!!

I STILL HAVE A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT BEING STILL! I bet those angels would hold me back too – like a horse lined up in the starting gate – just waiting for the bell, the doors to open, and the clear path ahead. But when it is time to move – Lord please move me. If you brought me back to life for forever – I can wait just one more day for this days’s moves…  Awaiting the resurrection rising – always…

Amen

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs AFTER Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

Matthew 27:50-53

Jesus Has Risen
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Matthew 28:1-10
