What is Lent?

A friend sent this note about Lent. Because I am away camping with scouts, seems a great read to send!

“Lent begins [on February 18 this year] with a service on Ash Wednesday. Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo–Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then became a time for penance by all Christians.

“The First Sunday describes Jesus’ temptation by Satan when following the Lectionary; and the Sixth Sunday (Passion/Palm Sunday), Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and his subsequent passion and death. Because Sundays are always little Easters, the penitential spirit of Lent should be tempered with joyful expectation of the Resurrection.

“Ash Wednesday emphasizes a dual encounter: we confront our own mortality and confess our sin before God within the community of faith. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship, and the Imposition of Ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation. This practice is the historic focus of Ash Wednesday observance and gave the day its name. Services usually include imposition of ashes and communion to begin this season of Lent.

“The Great Three Days—sometimes called the Triduum or Pasch—from sunset Holy
Thursday through sunset Easter Day are the climax of Lent (and of the whole Christian year) and a bridge into the Easter Season. These days proclaim the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. During these days, the community journeys with Jesus from the upper room, to the cross, to the tomb, and to the garden. They should be seen as a great unified service beginning with a service of Holy Communion on Holy Thursday and concluding with the services of Easter Day. What’s Up, Lord?

What Lord do I write?

It’s late or early, I know I know, just write.

Is it a plight ?

Or a fight ?

Or a praise, of course that’s right. 

A praise is a best to write.

There are people, Lord,

Who are hurting 

They are yearning 

A faith wants to start burning 

Their minds are churning. 

Your trust You are earning 

Help them Lord, bless their learning.

Lord, how are we to praise more?

You do ask us to explore

How and that You do but don’t keep score,

Foreverness is instore,

For those who know, You do assure,

And for those who ask, You give Forgiveness galore.

So let us draw closer and closer more.

Hello Lord, We pray You to set things right.

It’s a broken world that gives fright.

How Do We Weather Storms, Psalms 91 and 147

The coincidence (or not) that today they are talking about the next moon trip, for new astronauts, on the same day that is the fortieth anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion… Hmmm…. I think we need to not let tragedy prevent us from trying hard things… But it is good to take a moment to pray for them and for the situation that was previously – and for all the families and everyone impacted by both missions.

Well, you know it’s dangerous everywhere not just in space and so I do hope they make it to the moon. I’m not gonna talk about money costs right now, controversial and separate from my point because everything is expensive – like my new fridge to my old car, and because sometimes fulfilling dreams is PRICELESS – we see that fufulling dreams DO give other people the permission to dream on their own – and their dreams get them to be creative. Just think there were so many that were inspired by the first moon landing, and the science that came out of it was more than just Tang beverage but much science and engineering we don’t even realize…  Well, in all, it is the ability to get imaginations to be sky high that is my point here  -. so I will say that I do pray them safety and cannot wait to see “if it flies”…

As for the particular shuttle explosion, the Challenger, back in the 80’s, wow…. What a tremendous tragedy that day… I can remember being in the physics classroom to take our lunch break and the teacher told us and we didn’t believe him… then, shortly afterwards, the principal came on the P.A. system to tell us, and then teacher got out one of those old TVs on a cart, and rabbit ears… we watched the 80’s level of tv news anchors in shock… tragic… The O-rings – the scientists and congressional hearings – we were all glued to the TV (yet another marvel of technology).

Recently, I was listing off current timeline tragedies in conversation with a friend. All those things where “you knew where you were” when this or that happened – like I was not around when Kennedy was assassinated, but my era has had those types of stories too – like the Challenger shuttle explosion, like 911, Oklahoma Bombing, you know: big things… For the Lady Diana tragedy, we listened to that on the car radio after a day visiting friends, I can still see and feel our disbelief. For days after that, we were filled with the theories and the footage and the anger at the pursuers, and the backlash against the Queen for not issuing an immediate statement of grief or for not changing flag positions – all that those (the media and the general opinion) were critical for what she said were really important times and actions being taken as a protective grandmother, but the media instead took that good private moment and exploited it in such a crass way. 

Smaller news stories reverberate too, like the OJ Simpson verdict, the Berlin Wall falling, Reagan getting shot, these are all weaved into my life experiences with media and with public notice…

How about we take a moment to be remembering the rescues of life, of our personal rescues and even big ones in the media like the Miracle on the Hudson. Then there are personal ones – from smoke detector blessings to simply spreading salt on icy sidewalks and driveways. Of course there were no film cameras to record the minor major rescue of me walking back into the kitchen and realizing I forgot a pot of water boiling yesterday, oops… or someone leaving on an appliance they didn’t intend to leave on…  How many are there of the unknown rescues of our oops-es and our failings – do we recognize these as Divine and yes, they happen all the time!

We are saved so often we have no idea!

So – to weather the next storm, let us remember how many storms we have already weathered – and how many we have no idea that God went before us and saved us – this is a daily occurance surely – and a heavenly hope that the “Big one” like Red Fox would say on TV, will also lead us directly into God’s rescue. He “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147). God makes and knows the stars, calls them by name, He makes the wind to blow and the water to flow, and the grass to grow. And God deeply reminds that we are not to fear life – we are to fear Him – with noble humbling and loving fear – knowing how Great He Is.

He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.

The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.

Therefore Lord, we pray for Your Mercy in all these things of the world – in the good and bad and awful and storms of life and of the world – we pray Lord to see You Moving and blessing – we pray Lord to protect us and our fellow man – we pray Lord to draw even closer to you. We will weather the storms of life – WITH YOU – under Your Wing.

He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

Jesus, more than just a Barkeeper Friend

I enjoyed seeing friends last night at a happy hour event – and funny because I asked the barkeeper about a certain drink (old) but he didn’t know – and no he didn’t have my second choice either – it was a tequila bar anyway. Well, it was OK because after our playful banter I asked for a water and lemon – and then told him it was the best lemon water I had ever had (and it was really good!) 

Jesus was my barkeeper friend because honestly I needed the water more than a drink – I had the happy for the happy hour anyway – and we celebrated a friend’s big birthday in a little singing which he hated but probably appreciated…

Jesus is our friend in so many ways – not just the barkeeper friend that I spoke of – and of all those barkeepers who listen to so many people’s tales. I even used “barkeeper’s friend”, an excellent cleaner, this morning – wow it did wonders on my glass top stove! A barkeeper’s friend keeps things clean and lively and moving.

Jesus – is that friend above all friends – He guides – He inspires – He listens – and He even cleans up the job afterwords – including all the spills and divots and stuck on grease – and sinful stains…

I am glad that I bought this “barkeeper’s friend” cleaner and that I “bought into” asking for forgiveness and guidance from Jesus – and so blessed we are that Jesus “BOUGHT” our freedom with His Ransom of His Life… We couldn’t ever tip Him enough – and He wouldn’t take our money anyway – He Paid for it ALL.

Paul to the Ephesians 3:16-19 “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. INSTEAD you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 

I got an opportunity for saying INSTEAD. 

It came from words I did dread.

A change of plans, not planned by you

But fear not, God IS with us, TRUE. 

Life changes and you now are in that INSTEAD.

INSTEAD, think of how God doesn’t change. 

Yet we need to think of and live in God’s rearrange.

We might say: “WHY, Lord, Why?”

Who ARE the Helpers – and What Do They Do? Matthew 25:31-46

I continued to read my distant relative’s memoirs of the war – and came to the part about the helpers – and wow – isn’t that the untold stories – the many many helpers along the way of our lives and everyones…

I was also watching a TV show – about art that was hidden and rescued – and about the people who were the helpers – in WW2 – which some called “the Righteous” – well, wow…  Wow for the people’s efforts and wow for the good things done by God by His people…

Righteousness that is real and right – is the Righteousness of God which is not our own Righteousness, even though in the piece the person said that even the rescuer people who helped others (in WW2) did it from greed, making money from smuggling people, they at least got those people out and into freedom…

Righteousness from the Lord, however, is pure – it is meaningful in His desire to pull us into safety – to forgive us in grace and mercy so that we appear in the clear – when in forever we are going to live with God, the one who Rights us when we are wrong – and stands us up when we fall – we are OF HIS Righteousness.

And for my distant relative’s plight escaping after the bombings in Dresden from the forced labor work – this is the section of the memoir where strangers helped – they did simple things that did not cost them that dearly – except to be the helper if discovered – but they risked it:  “Somewhere on the way, two drivers loaded us with a truck, brought us to the protectorate border. We crossed the soggy fields to the first village. In the first cottage we were given food, we washed ourselves – especially our shoes, they gave us clean socks and in the evening, in the dark, we set off for the railway.”

So the strangers gave rides, showed the way, and gave new socks and food, and allowed my relative and his co-travellers to wash themselves. Seemed they were doing right in what they did – seemed normal to help there – seemed they did at least the minimum and really the minimum was probably all that was needed. And the Lord did the rest…

We also can be right in what we do for others – for strangers – and Right in what we can do is our devotion to the One who tells us what is right – and He will do the rest…

Jesus tells those who help to take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Jesus is the King who is also the Righteousness in us – and He does this to help His people through us: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Thank You Lord for Your Righteousness! Thank you to our helpers!

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’


“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Salt and Light Sermon – Matthew 5:13-16

Jesus said: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16        

MERRY CHRISTMAS IN JANUARY – JANUARY 25TH  – CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE A MONTH AGO WAS CHRISTMAS – SO FAR AGO AND ONLY A MONTH – OR SO SOON AGO – BECAUSE MY DECORATIONS ARE STILL UP AND MY TABLE IS STILL FULL OF CHRISTMAS CANDY AND YET the stores have already started not just valentines candy but easter too – we can’t just stop and rest around here can we – absorb one season and just live in it – and because it is good to savor each season isn’t it ???

And this sermon series is all about seasons – seasons of life – seasons of time – seasons of the church seasons as theological movements, tying them directly to our mission statement – with our missions. And I am quoting the worship team’s notes here – thank you – quoting that we want the congregation to be able to move with the story of God and live out our shared call to Know God, Show Love, and Grow Community.”

So – it is fitting to still be in Epiphany – and trust me those three kings are still on the move – still traveling like us – remember that if they took a while to travel TO Jesus – then it took them a while – imaginably their whole lives to travel towards forward to everyone they were intended to meet to tell them about Jesus – and to tell the people WHY Jesus came into the world – to save us – to be the One to take on our forgiveness of sins with His sacrifice… Those wise men and women still following Jesus – that is us too – we are to be wise and sharing…

So – yes – in our Series 1 of our sermons this 2026 year – we are talking about how the “Light Has Come” – where Jesus as God’s Son is our Light of the world. And as He is the Light in us – we can point to that LIGHT for others – if you remember our torches – that is just over a month ago that in the church building we made these torches to carry out our mission and to light our way – and today I am talking about us being the SALT too – from the Matthew scriptures we heard this morning – as we are to be light-bearers as the church –  we are to be the salt shakers too – how fitting for this morning’s weather – YES, we are to witness and to be present to follow God’s Spirit and connect with the world planting seeds of faith for the Lord to sprout and nurture and grow. Yes let our light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. And Jesus is the Light in the darkness (that Isaiah said was coming and came) – we are to be His LIGHT

AND SALT???  Well – if we were in the building I was going to have salt shakers! [show prop]

And in our sermon team discussions, a friend gave me this insight – that SALT in food makes us thirsty – then we are leaning towards and needing more of the filling of the water of Jesus… Thanks for that insight… WE ARE TO DESIRE THE LIVING WATER THAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL QUENCH OUR THIRST.

And SO – THIS talk could also be on how SALT makes food taste tastier – if you ever have made soup you would know what I mean – and salt with sweet is so good – who doesn’t love sea salt chocolate – or maybe in this weather that you are dreaming of the tropics – yes to be on the beach – or just plain salted chips – yet at times we see blandness in life – just like in food – and we are called to “spice it up” – be the light in a conversation and be the salt but not artificially – not with flashing neon or spicy jalapenos but with the true light of love – of Jesus – and the application of basic “salt of the earth” – REAL LOVE AND REAL COURAGE AND REAL INSIGHT. And insight – we need to not blindly lead with blaring flashlights that are too much and shining it in faces – but we need to shine our flashlights at our path in front of us – like with camping trails – like with cars low beams in fog – and sometime high beams in dark – but only in a courteous way.

I have a recent story about my car high beams – needed them for travelling recently – in SNOW like this – and what great timing for a snowstorm to match my message, LOL, but first I want to remind us of a sermon given by Martin Luther King Jr – about headlights – and that when he was driving with his brother or friend – that others were not dimming their high beams on this road – this was the 1950’s to 60’s when MLK Jr was preaching – and he equated dropping your high beams to loving others – loving even your enemies – that when his brother said “I’m so annoyed and I am going to flash my high beams too” well, MLK Jr said Jesus said to love – and I quote “someone has got to have the sense to lower their beams” – meaning someone has to have the sense to reduce the strife, reduce their retaliation –  and to keep loving – to make sense and not fly off the handle…  I love that analogy – I had included it in a previous sermon and I can send that MLK Jr link out later – but please do think of that use for LIGHT – we are to shine the Light of the Lord – not artificial light but real light from LOVE.

And so I can’t help but bring you the photos from my recent trip to illustrate some biblical truths today about Light and Salt. (and I am going to start my slide show WITH PHOTOS OF MY WONDERFUL TRIP TO EUROPE)

SLIDE – AIRPLANE LIGHTS AND THE MOON AND THE SUNRISE WHILE ON A PLANE – There are lights on planes and in the sky – and even the moon reflects the LIGHT – and we are to reflect the LIGHT – Jesus’s LIGHT.

SLIDE  – oh the lights in Vienna were beautiful – they were still up after Christmas – and yet we must remember that we need God’s Light – not just flashy lights – and this little oxalis plant – a shamrock – it needed some natural light because it won’t open it’s leaves without natural light. God knows we need Him to follow.

SLIDE  – You have to be careful!!!  This is us walking up to the castle for the wedding – yeah a broom on the cobblestones might have worked better than a shovel but actually it was the people walking that did melt much snow – and ice – really they weren’t prepared for the weather – and on the right my cousin just had his 2nd hip replacement operation – so he stayed in for sure – and we should listen to the Lord’s leading – and today for example we are staying in! And when we go out – let us walk like a Penguin – and a Christian!!! (probably not the bike)

SLIDE  – WINTER LIGHT showed beautiful on the snow – but no one applied salt (now I will give them a break in that salt is very expensive over there – we have it more inexpensive but still a lot for municipal budgets – and we get much more snow then they do…

The photo on the left – oh what a beautiful train ride –  oh it was good to be on track – and stay on track and isn’t that us with the Lord too – to be on His Track – the sure path is what we are told to be looking for – Proverbs 4 has great advice for snow and for living Godly:

Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you.
Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established.
Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil….

…the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble.

The photo in the  Middle –  I was in a rental car and trust me that I am still the biggest encourager of Subarus for snow and for everything – but wow this was a Toyota Corolla hybrid was new as rentals usually are – and wow I was so blessed that the Toyota was EXCELLENT in the snow  – And I got all the paid insurance – tires to everything – and therefore I was able to be BOLD –  I mean I know how to drive in the snow – I was raised in snow country – this stuff is not unusual… not recklessly but confidently – and slowing down and taking it easy but to get up hills you need momentum…

OH…. My car insurance was ALL PAID – sounds familiar  with Jesus our path is not just paved but PAID – Jesus was and is the ransom for our sins – He paid the price – and we have a certain forever future WITH Him – now we can be bold as Christians – BOLD with LOVE – BOLD with COMPASSION – BOLD even in the treacherous conditions of the world. Jesus said: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Oh yes – it was cold – my windshield kept freezing up and I didn’t have any washer fluid apparently so often I had to apply a water that I had bottled.

Water to keep hydrated – I had extra bottled water – good and I stopped the car and poured it on – and hey isn’t that a segway to us having Jesus and the Holy Spirit inside of us to hydrate our lives)

And Jesus giving us that boldness – to go – not like “to go where no man has gone before” – NO – but to go where God has already gone and calls us to mission – YES…

– The photo on the Right – since I was ALSO driving at night – and yes I needed high beams, it brought up better light for me to follow, yet in fog it was better to have the low beams on and look intently for the road in the dimness…  Yes I chose the narrow path where I brought my own light – this was the back roads like no other – not unlike going through the Poconos at night (which I promised my Dad that I would try not to do) – but in this case, these back roads is where I chose the back roads – the snow actually absorbed the freezing rain that was just starting to fall – and I took it slow – I had plenty of time and few people were on this road – and I just bare-knuckled on the steering wheel back to the hotel OK – remembering my skills and grateful to not be on that wide highway with those big trucks whizzing by – in the freezing rain where the road was much scarier…  avoid a big pile up

Oh yes – that Narrow path – in scripture Jesus said, recorded in Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

YES – I was able to take that narrow path – those backroads also because I remembered them a little bit from the last time I was there – and well, honestly the best thing – we can use GPS –

The GPS in the car took me on the main wide road, which was a bit scary like I said, and a toll road, and then I switched and I used the GPS on my personal phone instead, AND THE GPS IN MY HEAD AND IN MY HEART AND IN MY GUT –  took me back to the back roads. So the road less traveled… snow was hard packed there so at least there was grip. And I was bold in my approach, SAFE but bold and continued driving to the hotel home. Well it’s not really home but my temporary home on this trip – OH great scripture segway there – this earth we have is just our temporary HOME – we have a forever HOME – and we are just travelers here.

And how much better for us to make inroads with elbow grease of shoveling – and spreading salt – and I believe my path would have been easier if I had gone during the daylight – but you know, I did have the car lights, and those high beams. And often I felt like I was driving by faith and not by light…FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT… YEAH…

I LOVED HOW THIS ALL SOUNDED SCRIPTURAL WHEN I was driving (this was 2 weeks ago now) and this sermon kept flowing out in my head. I thought: gee if I had known I would have packed salt in my suitcase and I would have brought twenty five pounds of rock salt. I mean, maybe that would mean I would have 25 pounds room for chocolate on the way back too LOL – but MY POINT IS THAT IN LIFE , SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO BYOS – bring your own salt –

But back to my Europe trip –  I did pack my really really good boots – thanks to a friend for helping me pick them out – well they were just sitting there at Kohls as if God said “PUT THEM ON” – and keep going – Yes –the boots remind me to make a connection to the Armor of God

We are to walk the path of peace and keep walking – delivering the message of Jesus’s Love

Oh the cemetery –  I went to find my sweet cousin’s gravestone – which I had been before – and I met her years ago now – so blessed – she was my grandfather’s first cousin and she wrote my great great grandfather for 50 years continuously even though the letters never got thru that iron curtain but one – and that is another story I would love to tell you about – and well – my cousin never lost faith – and she was a strong light – a sure faith that shined to her family all those year behind the iron curtain – well that is her family gravesite on the left – I brought a red heart to place on it – and then I dug it out of the snow –

BUT WHAT’S THIS??? – what did I notice under my feet? A clear path – THIS WAS THE ONLY PLACE (BESIDES THE AIRPORT) WHERE I SAW SALT!!!!!  THE GRAVEYARD WAS NOT FULL OF DEATH BUT FULL OF LIFE – AND THE PATH WAS CLEAR – AND THE LIGHT SHINED THE WAY. AND WOW – I WISH I HAD VIDEO TO SHARE BUT THESE LITTLE PRESCHOOLERS WERE WALKING AND WERE SWEETLY CHATTY ALL THE WAY ON THEIR WALK ON THIS CERTAIN AND CLEAR PATH – IT WAS THE SIGHT I DELIGHTED IN – IT WAS LIFE AND JOY AND LOVE RIGHT THERE – AND THE PATH WAS CLEAR FOR THEM TO STEP FORWARD….

And like we do brine applications on our roads – like Jesus laid the path mixing his Living Water with us being salt of the earth – just like salting ahead of time on our paths –

There are so many connections with salt – but let me wrap this up with the connection we have to making the LIGHT and SALT work – when it’s cold… so let us not be cold to the world. But let us be warm to the world, and then we can warm up the situation.

–  I will remind you that the salt (for the roads) works best when it is warm enough – and well – us too – salt and light as insight work when they are brought to situations WITH LOVE. Just as salt needs to be used wisely, we need to be wise as we approach situation.

And I quote from my hometown area’s big export – ROCK SALT from underneath the lakes – yes there are stockpiles that the Lord must have intended to keep under the water – pushed out by glaciers – now mined for the last few hundred years…  so some info from the business Cargill. Com, Road Salt will “work,” i.e. it will melt ice, all the way down to -60 F.  However, the “practical working temperature” of salt is generally considered to be above 15 to 20 F.  The colder it gets, the more salt is needed to provide a given amount of ice melting action. The salt’s ice melting action slows as the temperature drops. 

OH – so this reminds us – when it’s cold in the world – we need to bring the warmth of God’s Love – we need to not be cold to the world’s people and their plight – but let us be warm to the world, and then we can warm up the situation – and the salt can work better – and our love can shine more – and we can carry the Light of Jesus further… Be His Hands and Feet.

So let me wrap this up in Prayer and in Benediction at the same time – We get to be salt and light and LOVE in Action – and when we remember to Bring the Salt and Bring the Light and be generous with each, and share LOVE – we can do so many great things for our fellow man – especially showing them that God is the One Who brings this LOVE out from us.

So please pray with me – Lord, You are asking us to walk with us – and for us to model Your actions – and to learn Your Ways – and to pray unceasingly to stay connected to You. You have led us safe thus far and urge us to keep going – we are to be Your Light and bring Your path-melting ability to spread salt into the situations and always always praise You for all the things we get to do – in Your Name Lord – in Your Name – AMEN

BENEDICTION – SO thank you for listening and let me remind us that we are being salt and light as love in action. And although we did not get to sing it – let me show us the lyrics of “They will know we are Christians by our LOVE” – a song which our worship leader said she loved because (and I quote): it’s not just being Christian and one in the spirit together, it’s also promoting peace, harmony and unity, it’s walking together in faith and life, and it’s work too! It’s working for justice and to spread the Good News.

And we pray that our unity will one day be restored

Keep Warm – with LOVE

I am not snowed in yet because it has not yet started to snow – but it is cold and I do plan to warm up today with a trip to a beautiful greenhouse conservatory around here – just the right warm up that I will appreciate…  Continuing my reading of my distant relative’s memoirs after WW2, when he was a forced laborer – it is tough to read their plight – it was COLD – and they were not taken care of more than slightly elevated slave labor – and yet my relative as a skilled worker was as careful as he could be – one to keep his head down but chin up in survival mode – he did escape after the Dresden bombings – went south on foot and by train/trams occasionally – made it home. He got help from friends, family and strangers.

But the story from the factory? and the people? wow!!! And being in survival mode is different for everyone – but in remembering how we make it though – we are to remember that others are travelling with us…  King Solomon in his Ecclesiastes poetry tells us that we are better together – and even best with God there too – that is the third in the threefold cord between friends.

The Value of a Friend – verses 9-12 Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Let us stay warm today and bring warmth to others – bring the strength of the Lord into your situation too. Selfish toil will bring us nothing – as King Solomon states – but “vanity” and “grasping for the wind“… Even striving for popularity is also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

And so it is better to share what we have with a friend – and LOVE each other. 

Let us use COLD temperatures to remember to bring the warmth ourselves to invigorate us to keep moving and keep loving.

And remembering his “friends”, my relative in the labor camp learned of their fates after the war. May we continue to remember others…

Here are some snippets: 

“Back to the factory… The factory produced vices from the smallest to the largest and mainly dividing devices for various uses. I worked on a lathe, a circular grinder and I was also on the transport – a two-wheeled cart for transporting material from workshop to workshop.

“How it was there… Monday to Friday we worked 10 – 11 hours a day, on Saturday until 2 pm. Twenty of us lived and slept in one room in the camp. Our food was cooked from one pot, without meat, very poor. The pay for the work was very low. Bread was sent to us from home.

“…apart from me, there was “Mr. N.” , the oldest in the camp, he was almost fifty years old, then “K”, a house painter, a tanner “T”, who didn’t stay there long, injured his hand and couldn’t work and probably bought himself out of there – lard, meat for the Germans and was released. “M” – over forty years old, could sing songs beautifully, was blind in one eye, in his youth he used to go to the priest for pears. He was unlucky, after an air raid he found a suitcase full of fine women’s underwear on the street – he took it and, as a typical Ausländer [foreigner], was accused of looting, imprisoned and only in May did he reach home completely exhausted and died. “D” was also imprisoned – for Christmas he wanted to meet his wife at the border, he violated some regulation and was imprisoned in Litvínov, where there were already chemical plants at that time. There they tormented him with cold, etc., he returned after two months alive, but completely exhausted.”

The Vanity of Selfish Toil

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Better a handful with quietness
Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:

When You Have the Lord, You Have Everything, Psalm 23

A few times this week I have found myself in a conversation that we reiterate: “When You Have the Lord, You Have Everything” – OR “When you have lost everything you realize you have the Lord and the Lord is Everything and therefore you have everything you need…”

As for myself – I can not even compare myself to my distant relative who survived the WW2 forced labor camps – I have continued reading his memoir – and we think of these days so far ago but they are less than 100 years ago…. And having just come back from a trip to europe – the towns and landscape are fresh in my mind and I envision my distant relative’s plight from train rides to walking on foot – it is hard to imagine making it – and it is truly the protection of God – physically – that he made it. There was intervention on the way – an old guard member who stopped guarding them – perhaps knowing the situation in Dresden – perhaps just feeling compassionate – we will never know. And there were people who helped – gave them fresh socks – protected them.

And in life we do ask – when bad things happen to good people – does that mean that God’s Hand is withdrawn? I don’t think so – it simply means that we can’t imagine how deep the brokenness of this world is and oh how healing it must be when we turn to God – it emphasizes the empathy – and down plays the whimsy of our God. All I really know is that I will follow God either way. and we do know the Psalm 23 truth that David sings about: The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. (and we know of people who help us immensely in bad situations, they are God’s angels.)

Perhaps in the horror of war or simply in the mundane of days or in the midst of tragedy or just the day to day life – we are to remember that God does not change and His mercy is His – and someday wars will cease and evil will be put to rest – forever.

Here is the next installment of the WW2 memoir – my relative had just escaped the forced labor camp that was destroyed by the air raid – 1945 in Dresden – and a few of them had just come out of the air raid shelter and decided to leave – go south and continue to freedom. (May we always remember to go to God and to freedom.)

Memoir part 2:

“The sight was terrible. No one knows how many people died in Dresden. A rough estimate is 35,000 people. I had half-shoes in my briefcase, which I gave to a friend who ran to the shelter barefoot. I had a razor, a small jar of lard, and my friend had bread.

“We reached Dippoldiswalde by road, but there a younger guard wanted to send us back to Dresden. But the old Volkasturmák, who was guarding us after that, just waved his hand. Then we went to Cínovce carefully through the forest above the road so that no one would catch us. It took a long time, in the forest above Cínovce I washed myself in a puddle, shaved so as not to arouse suspicion.

“There was no border in Cínovec, we went to Dubí. There was the final border of the tram /under the ČSD train station. It was noon, we heard planes overhead, heading for Dresden. We didn’t wait, we changed to a tram, got off at the final stop and headed on foot.

“Somewhere on the way, two drivers loaded us with a truck, drove us, showed us the protectorate border. 

“We crossed the soggy fields to the first village. We were given food in the first cottage, we washed ourselves – especially our shoes, they gave us clean socks and in the evening, in the dark, we set off for the railway. We arrived at the train station and took the first morning train. I changed to a train to “—“, I was left alone, my friends turned off to “—“. I road as if to work, there were checkpoints passing by, checking my documents, they didn’t notice me.”

Praise the Heaviness of The Rock, and the Lightness of Our Burdens

A few friends helped me recently and when it came to remembering that saying: “many hands make light work” – it is SO TRUE…  What was monumental was easier with the right hands and the commitment to the work. At that time, one person picked up just one of my boxes of spiritual writing and said “Whoa – this is HEAVY!” (I print two sets and keep them secured for my children – no other reason than simply paper will last for a bit longer than remembering to look at electronic things)

“This is HEAVY” or “these are heavy”, or however they stated it – they were probably talking heavy in weight – yet I absorbed that double meaning of BOTH – in weight and in description of spiritual fact: yes the reading is heavy – it is meaningful (at least to me) – it is serious – it is intense and condensed and heavy in meaning… 

AND even though it is HEAVY – yet it is also LIGHT – because the HEAVY is the Lord as our ROCK our stronghold and on which we stand – “I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (from Psalm 18) … And it is LIGHT – as in our Lord as Savior gives us that rest. Jesus said “Take My yoke upon you and learn from me – for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” 

And that LIGHT – what does that mean to us? It means let Jesus carry the load and we live freed up from worry and burdens – as well as it means work like you mean it and work as if you are working for the father and take on the burdens of others to lighten their loads. LIGHT also means Jesus will help us immensely  – as it states in Psalm 18: “For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.”

SO YES! HEAVY AND LIGHT – Praise Jesus – that is RIGHT!!!

Sheltering in God, A Travelog Portion Remembering War

“What are you willing to take a bullet for?” That is the bold question/phrase that sticks in my head from a conference talk given by Michael Card, amazing Jesus-junkie author and singer songwriter. What are you willing to take a bullet for – or a bomb – or even willing to bite your tongue? He said he was willing to take it for the Gospel’s sake but NOT necessarily other causes – he knew to hold true to the Gospel truth but don’t get caught up in the world – to really really think about what you get up in anger for… Otherwise, we are to remember WHOM we work for – God – and we are to be spreading the love and the knowledge of Jesus – acknowledging the Holy Spirit to move us – knowing that Jesus is our Rock (Psalm 18:2). We are to live spreading love and kindness. We are also to be sheltering in God’s love when we do have to step out in danger. God shelters us – we should shelter ONLY in God. When everything else seems shaky – God is our Strength.

I think that in the world today (and forever in the past which had it’s horrors too) that we are to be patient and working in LOVE. So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. James 1

I had such peace on vacation – I did NOT feel like I was stepping out into danger when on vacation – I mean there are bad areas everywhere in this world – and we can stick with the touristy ones and be OK – and we can stick with family and be OK. I was OK and I loved being on vacation. I had such peace that I was supposed to be there and to connect and to enjoy and to rest in less worry and more watching.

It was and is surreal to simply be and be on vacation and also be able to know that home was OK and be able to come home. One of the amazing things that I collected on vacation was memories – of family and places – of being in the historic places – and imagining their plights. And connections – I continued to collect new connections to family of old ties.

And one of my cousins sent me a documented memoir of her distant relative – who was in the forced labor for the war machine.

I can’t really imagine war that bad – can only imagine due to stories – because we live in a land fairly peaceful – well very peaceful compared to other flare ups in the world right now – and those in old times – especially in the midst of the WW2 scenes described in this memoir. He wrote of forced labor of men from neighboring countries pulled in to support the axis war machine – info which is easily shared and distributed today but would have been made into a problem during the war itself – if that person spoke up it would have been fuel for punishment and worse.  The horrors of war are imaginable by some and known to far too many. I will include some excerpts of his memoir at the bottom of this blog. Oh how we are best to share love over war – war is complicated and all that. And LOVE is DIVINE – Love is what we need to share and to teach. I can not comment on uprisings and when one becomes a martyr for a cause – it is so very very complicated and there are many many tears. All I know is to keep sheltering in God, He leads.

On my guided tour of a city in the middle of Austria, after visiting the castle, we stopped on the main bridge and I took a quick photo of an embankment’s entrance that was labelled – the tour guide stated that this was an air raid shelter built during WW2 – and built by concentration camp and labor workers chosen for their skill sets. WOW. We did not enter it but I found some info on the web – there were political prisoners (mostly from being inhabitants of the invaded countries) who were forced in these work camps to build up the axis war machine and it was even envisioned that new copies of cities would be recreated in these neighboring countries. The prisoners built this air-raid shelter which now has a “tunnel of remembrance” museum. We did not enter the tunnel but I can imagine through photos. Separately on this trip, I was in many underground locales – including a restaurant that had cellars down to roman-built era stone walls and a water well – covered now – and the underground tunnel cave cellar was used to hide from attacks by the invasions in 1520’s and 1680’s. Yeah – old wars – always part of our history. And sheltering? Always a part of our needs.

We need to shelter today and all days in the love of the Lord – we need to know that God is covering us with His wings even in the midst of tragedy.

My extended family was touched by those unthinkable levels of war – some like my own ancestors left before the wars of their time flared up – left before WW1 even – but some of the family that remained, and many of the people at that time were unwillingly drafted into war preparations and into the political prisoner camps simply because they lived where they lived.

In Europe, the history lessons are immense and full of forever conflicts – uprisings cataloged from the 1600’s to 1800’s were intense and in the 1900’s, less than one hundred years ago, they flared up again, including many people who got taken up as political prisoners like my distant relative but with some local freedoms to live too – a false sense of security – he was forced to work in the north in a factory – these were labor camps but since he was a skilled worker he did not suffer the same cruelties as worse off people of the time. In the memoir, he mentions the work they did was in a former engineering and iron foundry – a small factory – there were other prisoners from his region and surrounding areas that also were highly skilled. They were made to work from 1943 to 1945. He escaped during the 1945 air-raid bombings led by the allied forces. 

He said that “the years 1943 and 1944 passed quite peacefully, worked 10 hours a day and on Saturdays until 1 pm.” They attended local museums and sights and even concerts. He said that near their factory was an old gothic church, where hundreds of people took refuge during the air raid and were buried there in the ruins. He stated that on the evening of the first raids that he “went to the train station to send a box home (it never arrived). In front of the train station, I saw hundreds of refugees, from the East, fleeing from the advancing army. I returned to the camp in the factory. At about 10 o’clock in the evening, there was an air raid on the outskirts, which we watched from the window… planes arrived in two waves. By then we were in the shelter on the outskirts of the factory.”

He got to a shelter – they surely knew war was coming and they built these shelters – and he got into a shelter. Oh may we also know when the horrors of war are coming and get into God’s almighty shelter.

He continued: “We heard the bombs falling near and far, one so close that the shelter shook and sand poured. I sat and waited, shoes on, a light coat on, a briefcase with some food and a razor in my hand. How would it turn out? Some knelt and prayed.” … “It took a long time, it gradually passed like a summer storm. Finally there was calm, we climbed out of the shelter through the damaged entrance. Our four-story factory building was in ruins, the rubble was about two meters high. Everything we had in the camp was gone.” … “After the disaster it was clear that no one would watch over us, so several of us decided to leave immediately. Others stayed there and survived two more days of day and night air raids. We only heard it on the way home.”

OH – ‘on the way home’ – isn’t that the best calling – to be living and walking with the Lord – we are going on our way home and we do see and will see the horrors of the day – but we are to keep walking.

He continued: “We had only just seen the devastation on the street. Caused by fragmentation and incendiary bombs. Time bombs exploded in front of us and behind us. The houses on both sides of the street only had perimeter walls, through the windows you could see everything being demolished – all the floors from the roof had caved in. A water pipe had been torn out on the street, water was flowing. Time bombs exploded in front and behind, but we still continued to the edge of the city. We passed through unharmed, but the sight was terrible.”

I will have to read more of his memoir – but just to summarize – they walked and took trains, met up where relatives were – and just got out of there and went back home.

Thank God – going home saved him and allowed for family to be born after him that allowed me to go back and meet this family – and know connection and know plight – and know sheltering – and know blessings of living to tell stories.

This is where I connect to an immensely powerful scripture in James 1 – to learn and to persevere through trials – and to shelter – and to know – and to wait. and while waiting – do the perfecting that God wants to do in you. Don’t wait and wallow – but wait in perfecting workings in you to have that faith that God wants you to have that He is in control. 

Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting.

And if we have the peace of the moment right now in prosperity – let us remember how rich we are and to not gloat but to remember our fragileness: Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away…

And if we have war or we see war – let us shelter in God’s love and grace and be patient: So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Profiting from Trials
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

The Perspective of Rich and Poor
Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away. For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

Loving God Under Trials
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

Qualities Needed in Trials
So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Doers—Not Hearers Only
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Be Fed, travelog, Matthew 6 – God takes care of us

I returned from my trip, here is a writing that I pre-started while on the trip – about feeding the birds and being fed ourselves.

I did not feed any birds today, but wow, I was certainly fed!!! Wow vacation food amazing, hotel breakfast and dinners and wow amazing food and amazing sugar sugar sugar sugar… and I got some protein in too… and a little bread… I had excess bread and filled my left pocket (and when I got home there were still lots of crumbs in it).

Most days I can and even the day I left, I feed the birds. So on the day I left, train to the plane, I accidentally missed getting off at the station at the airport, oops. So I had to get off at the next station and wait ten minutes for a train to go backwards – I RARELY – well never – do that – but it happens when you are not paying attention… It thankfully didn’t cut into my excessive prep time too much, only 30 minutes, and I made it to security, the plane etc… whew! 

And I had extra bread, so I decided to feed the birds at the station… it made me happy – happier to share… And I imagine the truth of that scripture: if God takes care of these birds, how much MORE He is taking care of us…

And when I got to Vienna, I had extra bread and I fed the pigeons… pigeons are like the unwanted but isn’t it so amazing that pigeons have this beautiful purple sheen to their feathers.  And they certainly get enough food even in the middle of a city. God takes care of those birds… surely He take care of us… and I’m not just talking about food.

Today I did not see any birds, but the weather was bad for birds today, in the tiny town that I was in. I was thankful for my nice boots and also thankful for my warm clothes and I was thankful for the place I was going to and the place I came from – as well as being able to travel to the places in general – with lots of opportunity to be thankful. I was thankful for friends, old and new, thankful for the opportunity to visit, and thankful I had a warm place to return to after a nice tour… and even though I am still shifted in sleep, I know the Lord has taken care of me immensely. I am the bird He has fed today – And yesterday… and the day before – and that He will feed tomorrow.

… and tomorrow after that… And I’m not just talking about food…

Be fed… Let the Lord share His with you.

Matthew 6:26-34 NKJV
Jesus said: Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Notice the Brokenness, Look for God’s Healing, Survive, Now it is Our Turn to SHINE the Light – Travelog

I started this travelog on the first LONG day of travelling and well I knew both that I would not finish it until now – and that the items of the early days were not worth complaining about – at all – even if I noticed them – and I knew the small hiccups would be replaced by the great big drink in of vacation and blessings and thankfulness… 

Yes – so starting in an evening traveling overnight – landing at 8am – without sleep except maybe 2 hours of napping on and off, it’s weird – a little…  And traveling is a whole culture – especially for business people and the airline folks – and even the workers on the ground and in the trains, but I am blessed to understand both the benefits and the hiccups of air travels and ground transport and life in general. I’m blessed to survive and THRIVE.  (PS this blog is not just about travel but about life)

I felt incredible PEACE that I was supposed to be here, multiple cities and adventures. In addition, I knew that I WANTED to be here. And I appreciate the Sarah Boynton cartoon depiction of a cat holding a candle saying “Offer whatever light you can” (probably written just after 9-11) and to know the Spirit cajoling of SHINE the Light wherever you can. I took a printout of this with me – kept it nearby to remember – to SHINE THE LIGHT. OFFER HOPE and JOY and PRAYER and EVERYTHING…

And for day 1-2, I came early to Europe so that I would be set right soon. And what a marvelous time that was – seeing great friends from our college days – where we stayed in touch over the years – yeah 35 years – amazing…)

It was a JOY to be there (be here, as I am editing this what I wrote 10 days ago)!!! Travelling and seeing sights, time with good friends and family on the horizon… New people to meet, experiences to understand…

The broken parts of this early part of the travel for this blog are going to be minimal surely when this trip is over but worth typing about for understanding that we notice the brokenness and then decide to fix or ignore or live with – and I am not JUST talking about travelling but about life.

1. Broken was the TV screen on my plane seat (it was ok I had my kindle movies downloaded, actually probably better entertainment that I wanted to catch up with – David Letterman interviews – and then I had Groundhog Day downloaded – and over and over I have seen it – like he does over and over on one day – love Bill Murray). 

2. Broken (or weird) was the low heat in my first room (it’s OK they gave me a cool space heater).

3. Broken was the little plant needing water and light for the little jar of Oxalis shamrocks to perk up – I have these at home and not only does it need regular water – it needs the light to open up and each night it closes its leaves down. So, no worries it was OK, as the hostess said she would water it after her shift (and funny how I mentioned the plant to my friend (also a plant-geek like me) and he said that when he had breakfast that he noticed the oxalis and it was well watered! haha – he must have sat at the same table I was at – and noticed the watering – I am glad to have had that insight – that someone noticed – but we don’t always have to know when we do something and it helps others – our job is just to keep helping), and I did go down later and saw them all (the plants from the tables) sitting in the windowsill. Now knowing the tall building these probably don’t get much light but they got SOME. They will survive just like we will – even a little light is OK, right?

4. Not broken but me being picky of having just the boiled not soft or scrambled eggs that first morning of hotel breakfast (well maybe that was better to have cooked fully on the first day while travelling) – and in hindsight knowing those eggs were there was a Godsend on the last day I was in Vienna and back to the same hotel, as I took a couple eggs in the plastic bag that the hostess gave me for the road as I was rushing to catch an early train – I sat with the bag and my thankfulness on the train.), 

5. and the broken world… The brokenness of the world is paramount and noticeable and the reason we NEED to shine the light. The rest is just fluff. And I am part of the brokenness fluff and realness too… And so even being part of the brokenness, we are to shine the Light – be the Light and the Salt – be whatever help we can be. Be part of the healing.

There are a THOUSAND POSITIVES, and I just wanted to mention these slight negatives of travel BECAUSE THESE ARE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, and were certainly nothing that I didn’t survive and that we don’t normally NOT worry about. Don’t worry. The noticeably needed truth is, in all cases, the LIGHT of the situations is what is needed – We are to SHINE THE LIGHT.  Just like the Christmas decorations that were still up the days after epiphany, being LIGHTS, the blessed hope of the Light of the Lord is TRUE, and shareable. And we need to share it.

If we have had any healing at all of brokenness in our lives, may we realize it was and IS the Lord Whom heals us –  may we realize that we survived – not just silly annoying things like in travel – but the BIG life things – that God has been there consistently when we turned to Him. Maybe we also give some GRACE to the situations that we are in – trivial and life-altering – because GRACE is what God gives to this world and MERCY too. We can do that – give some forgiveness and keep moving.

Now before I packed and hit the train, I watered my little plant – I didn’t have time to go water all those plants, but at least I watered mine.  We’ll, maybe just we can be LIGHT in small segments – and certainly cover our own oopses too.

Next adventure day awaits – keep shining the light! 

PS – I couldn’t help but notice more Oxalis shamrocks in the next city – at their breakfast too (and trust me these great included breakfasts are so fabulous – and the hotel prices are fabulous)…  I smiled when I saw the well watered and opened Oxalis at this next place – smiling like it LIKED the Light.  Me too…

SHINE THE LIGHT!

Vienna was an Amazing Time

Vienna waits for you – by Billy Joel – oh so true!!!

It is a whirlwind now to be back – but so glad I have my photo collections – and I only wish you could feel the air and smell the smells and see the sights first hand – a travelogue just for Vienna

.

SO, Here are my many Vienna posts (with rhyme)

about Vienna – oh so fine – it was a GREAT time.

Mozart sold chocolate on every corner,

And a great hotel, even if my room could have been a little warmer,

I appreciated the convenience next to St Stephen’s Cathedral,

And the lights were still shining from Christmas decor as well.

My friend, fellow school alum, also stayed at the same hotel,

We have known each other for 35 years, hearing us joyfully banter you can tell!

And so before and after the excursion to middle Austria, and train riding,

We did just a small amount of Vienna sightseeing and dining.

Just enough for me to want to come back, (but maybe in spring),

Someday – someway – I will plan a new trip in fact,”Vienna waits for you” is a familiar ring…

And the train rides? through the forests and cities? DIVINE!

And I didn’t care that the train in snow was delaying me, up to an hour slowed time.

Yes, with life, I agreed that God blessedly slowed me down, 

Resting in counting blesses, I had no frown!

And the snow and castles and churches and life view was enjoyed, 

European trains a great method of travel employed.

I saw the beautiful fairy tale life as well as tough imagined sights,

and shared in envisioning old people’s probaby often painful plights.

So I knew I was BLESSED in the view. (splurged first class $75 too)

And mentally how thankful to God, yes my thankfulness grew…

Vienna – and travel and as Billy Joel sings – Vienna and yes LIFE waits for you…

I hope you enjoy appreciating travel life like I do…

Quite the most BEAUTIFUL way to start the day, 8am arrival (2amEST) to Vienna Austria. YEAH, took the plane to the citytrain ($14euro) and walked right into St Stephen’s Cathedral… GORGEOUS… and the Wiseman are still at the creche, in awe like me… I also lit a candle for my friend , watching over us while holding Jesus’s Hand… AMEN…

Power nap, Patisserie places, Pal, Paintings Art Museum and Roman Ruins, Ponies Playing Polka, Plazas all lit up, Puffy mylar balloon sculptures, privies, and PALACES! Day 1 in Vienna was PRICELESS.

Thurs Jan 08 morning

A great day the traveling way! Went up to the top of St Stephen’s Cathedral tower, then connecting train rides (about 2 hours) to middle Austria which has the sweetest touch of snow decorations… so blessed… lots of great food lots of chocolate lots of Austrian desserts and lots of friends old and new!

 then back after the Friday excursion (oh so fabulous and I will write another time about that) with a train back to Vienna on Saturday lunchtime —–


Sat, Jan 10 evening

Treasures Treasures Treasures of the Imperial Jewels museum in Vienna, CROWNS and CROSSES. Biggest gems so unbelievably beautiful… and an amber altar, and Charlemagne’s Gospels copy guided GOLD from 800s… wow!!! And much from the Holy Roman Empire into the Hungarian Austrian Empire… WOW!!!

Saturday night – dinner back in Vienna at an authentic restaurant:

Well, still catching up on photos and this is amazing dinner in Vienna with authentic Austrian culinary traditional veal schnitzel and sweet music at our table… it is the Cellar of the 12 Apostles Restaurant, with actual ROMAN RUINS in the basement, location of a well, and a wine cellar, where they used to take shelter when the ottoman invasion occurred, as well as air raids… well, the amazing food that we have opportunities to enjoy when traveling, crazy, it’s so good to be reminded of our blessings, that we don’t live in an era of starvation or wars overhead… there’s so much to learn in Vienna and Europe…

Sunday morning Jan 11th on my way north on the best train ride – 5 hours….

Come take a train ride with me.

From Vienna to Prague, it’s so much to see.

The ride first class, well more like regular to amtrak, but a bottle of water was free.

Breakfast portable, I brought from my hotel, gifted by the hostess, a sweet lady.

5 hours riding much better than driving or flying, cheap too, $75, whee!

And the snow? Oh looked so heavenly. 

There were pond skaters, freestyle and hockey. 

Skiers, downhill and cross-country. 

In villages, castles and churches, yet cities and countryside often looked lonely. 

But the forests? Ancient and snowy. PICTURESQUE so excitedly.

Movies and photos don’t give it justice, next time just COME WITH ME…

I’ll ride another train like this SO HAPPILY.

Plague to Parking Spots, Praise and Prayer is POWERFUL

Praise and Prayer are POWERFUL.

Prayers are Powerful but perhaps put off by pride. Pity… please pray!

Pray pray pray. Praise praise praise. 

Parking Spots are PREMIUM, particularly in Prague. I PRAYED, powerful petite prayers for parking peace and placement. After put-off prayer in my pride, it popped up – A PLACE! Perfect position, piled particles (snow) did not prevent, I PARKED ! Proof in GPS (God provided satisfaction).

Prayers for parking gave peace. Prayers were for petrol too, pulled up and out, pleased to putz around place to place. Plane paths were provided, particular plans and participants played out particularly pleasantly. Praise praise praise.

Pleased to put away proudness for humbled praise after some oops of my almost perils. God PROTECTED me. We (I) should make praise paramount. 

Praises place to place, I ALSO saw physical Pillars of Praises!

Praises in Pillars built post-plague (after 1700) prove that people praised and prayed. Prayers have ALWAYS been part of piety, pray knowing God’s Power to provide paths of petition. Especially in plague. 

Pestis and pestilence prevention is paramount, our power to prevent them is pleasing, and our hope through pleading with our lives lived in clean passage, oh we will praise!

They praised and prayed after plague, 1300s-1700s, so surely we can praise and pray before and after ALL problems. 

We have POWER in PRAYER. God is PAYING ATTENTION ALWAYS.

PPS The plague Black Death from bacteriun Yersinia pestis started in the 1300’s with outbreaks every 5-10 years, last ones in the 1700’s, at times killed 25%-75% of populations, last cases then prompted pillar tower buildings all over Europe.

Start with THANKFULNESS

With THANKFULNESS, I have returned home from an amazing double triple trip – seeing beautiful sights and then seeing family in the area. My memories are starting to slip already in this short time frame – but you know, I took a thousand photos – there was SO much and so many blessings – and so much I was able to unplug my mind from work after couple days and to “BE” in the moment.

I have many thankfulness-es for this trip and starting with thankfulness to the Lord going and continuing with thankfulness in the moment and now in thankfulness home. Home is good – but vacation is the best way to be refreshed in immersion in another place with people the Lord brings you to. This trip was so good for my soul in knowing that I am home where I am – and I can both see the sights and know how temporary this life is – even if you are looking at 1000 year old things. As a friend reminded me, we look at ancient ruins with awe – but we forget the rocks are even older than that! (And I remember the scripture that if we do not praise, even the rocks will cry out… so I praised and praise the Lord for being able to take this trip!)…

So, to start: the Austria countryside – I would definitely visit there again! We had a walking tour of the amazing place – developed by the richness of the iron barons – the iron industry – and the medieval and Renaissance times – where rivers converge to continue down to the Danube river – and upstream they would send logs downstream for the easy transport…

The train ride was easy (except for my heavy suitcase) – from and back to Vienna. I travelled with another friend – we were weather OK. HOWEVER to fly through north of us were all cancelled – the storm was all ice there and was terrible…  So I renewed thankfulness that I actually got there – and the trains (and busses) are AMAZING in Europe…

In general – the snow was a novelty to them there – rarely do they get it – not in the mountains – so  they don’t have salt or even shovels but the main road they plowed – the rest was dependent upon foot traffic to beat it down – I was never so thankful on this trip than to having been raised in cold climates – and understand snow and ice and double layering – AND the ability to be inside looking out of amazing windows.

Well, I have not thanked God enough – wow – wow – the Lord really I have to thank for all of it – both the good stuff like money saved exclusively for travelling) and for the reminders of TEMPORARY life here on earth – teaching us to count our days – and yeah hours too with time changes and with train schedules… Mistake me not, as beautiful it was and decadent in food (that’s a whole other photo album) it is best to NOT store up treasures down on earth, but keep love going, store treasures up in heaven (and in your heart and head AND SOUL)…

Even the Crumbs of Faith – Reprise

If there ever was a great message – it is that even just grasping for the crumbs of our daily bread – Jesus – is so worth the pick-me-up…

Here is an old writing I did – still love the story:

Precious story – Jesus and a Gentle woman, a Canaanite, Jesus NEVER refuses the call for Him to provide mercy. Matthew’s Gospel are writings to the first Christian communities – new in their faith…

And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. (Matthew 15: 21-28)

Mercy, Jesus NEVER refuses the call of Mercy…
Matthew describes the ever-present crush of people seeking Jesus – crushed by the crowds and yet a small puppy of a persistent person catches an eye and an ear… Oh just the crumb of connection… This Canaanite woman would not be brushed off by the disciples, she is smart and very engaging in her direct conversation with Jesus. We need to be that way too.

She has faith that the Lord, her Lord, could save her daughter.  We need that faith too. Even if she knows she is on the outside (a Canaanite to a Jew), this woman is going to try anyway… Persistent – begs for mercy – giving it all she has… that is us too saying “I have to try”… saying “I have to talk to Jesus”… she believes in His mercy… we can too… Jesus takes pity… Jesus says ‘all you need is faith’… Jesus says ‘it is your faith that heals you’…

Crumbs are what the puppies will take… Crumbs at the bottom of the bag, they still taste sweet and are full of flavor… Better a crumb than nothing. Crumbs… the last few crumbs of your hope… a last-ditch effort… try and try – and know your faith will bring you to Jesus’s mercy… We have to try… We have to believe…

If we don’t believe in Jesus, we won’t look for Jesus…

If anyone can help us, Jesus can. Jesus does.
Jesus NEVER refuses a sincere cry for Mercy. Seek Him.

Everyone, no matter what, can ask for mercy. Follow Him.

Ask Him.

Getting Ahead of My Head – a Head of My Enemy

It is interesting to remember and revisit old posts (while I am still travelling and pre-posting) – and this post from 2019 was simply and truthfully about not getting ahead of myself…. Yes – a head of my enemy is my own head and getting rescued by God again and again from getting away with myself…

A HEAD OF MY ENEMY, 24AUG 2019

I’m glad to set this devotion down, out of my head. Because I have been thinking about it for weeks…

It is related to a favorite praise song – Defender.

The Defender lyrics speak of God knowing what is best for us and speak about Him going to win our war before we even know He’s gone.

And the lyrics talk about him bringing us the head of our enemy…. So, before you say that is archaic and grotesque and awful, or even if it is figurative – let me tell you my take on it – YES, God will bring you a head of your enemy because most of the time your enemy is your own HEAD. A HEAD of my enemy is me getting AHEAD of myself…

A HEAD of my enemy is me getting AHEAD of myself… 

I do it all the time, I get ahead of myself!!!!

I over think things and I think of things that I should just give up to God.

I need to pray to focus on the Holy Spirit to move me and even keep me still… We all need to focus on the fulfillment of the Holy Spirit’s needs, not ours. I have to stop running to catch up.

I have to be still enough to be caught…

A great sermon reminder this past week was: “what if you are asking for a specific thing but God wants to give you something EVEN BIGGER?”… Therefore, give up your own agenda and let the Lord bring you what He knows you need and He will bless you even more …

The lyrics ring so very very true and also are telling of the old testament story of Jehoshaphat – God went ahead of him, won His war. Jehoshaphat was told to send out praise singers ahead…  To let God fight your battles and win THE war also rings true for the story of Deborah of the book of Judges, as she told Barak that God had already done the work, all he had to do was fulfill his duty – be the Lord’s…

Daily Bread and then Some Good Crumbs

I don’t actually read “The Daily Bread” daily – but have known of its worth and goodness for years – and many of my friends recommend it – and a couple times someone has given me a copy – like the man who gave me oil for my heater – found a copy in his car and just needed to give it to me – for some Holy Spirit reason that I have not picked up on – except that they felt the need to…

The Bible Project: “Old Testament Summary” on YouTube

Well, I am pre-writing while on vacation and this is such a good video to share – and the whole “The Bible Project” is awesome.

This one video is about the Old Testament – to understand how it was constructed – and also remember that God has been guiding this whole process of the bible coming to be – as well as guiding the whole plan.

God’s Goal in not a Game but a Gain – for Perfection

I am travelling and writing in advance and this devotion from 10 years ago “popped” up in my head…

I loved the game “perfection” when I was a kid – oh the challenge – to get all those pieces in places before the timer was up and before the game board popped up and tossed everything everywhere – POP – fun – and frustrating – and a goal to finish that game – yeah…

God’s goal in life is not to play the game but to get a gain in devoted followers and to get them to listen and get them to click in before the end ot the time allotted for gain – (again it is no game)…  Like the perfection board – we all have unique fits – we all have calling – and God knows where we all fit.  Likewise, we can HELP God by being the light – by helping the people get their piece of life together – to help them turn themselves upright and be ready to fit into God’s plan – or in the example of “perfection”, ONLY GOD can move their piece into the perfect match with Him… 

And God has not only WON the game – HE DESIGNED THE BOARD…

Here is my devotion from 10 years ago – so blessed that we are called to keep working the board…  LIFE…  I was writing this about myself – and about life in general in God’s Plan – but it’s for all of us – we are out there working WITH Him. Working the Plan – working to help is being Hands and Feet of God…

Perfection, 07Sept, 2016 

Ok, so you’ve accepted Jesus, accepted you were loved by GOD to be saved thru the bloodshed of Jesus, and yes, you have even been treasured so much that you still have to question: “This was all for us? For me???”

Ok, now what??

Yeah, you aren’t on your death bed, YOU actually pray that you have energy to live out God’s plan picked for you….

Perhaps you feel that you need to accept God’s command to go make disciples?…
Yet perhaps you feel more work needs to be done to clean out every corner of your heart first?…
Perhaps God says DON’T wait….

Yes, God says sing your praises and share His Grace and HE will see you thru each storm as you arrive at it… But God ALSO asks you to work the soil in the lives of the people around you, as well as within your own life….at the same time…

God wants wholeness from society, not piecemeal pockets of salvation…. He wants perfection and HIS game is no game at all, He wants a time where we ALL accept our salvation at His appointed time.

Perfection, one of my favorite games growing up… Fit all the pieces in the spring-loaded puzzle board before that timer is up and POP!… The whole board pops out throwing all the pieces everywhere… Finish the board and the timer is stopped… Perfection for eternity…

Each piece must be fit individually into the unique spaces. Each piece is different from all the rest, some are tricky, they all must be studied (or shape memorized) for uniqueness… and they ALL must get into the board before time is up…

Each SOUL must fit individually into HIS plan. Each soul is different from all the rest, some are tricky, they all must be studied (or shape memorized) for uniqueness… and they ALL must get into the space marked by God’s plan before time is up…

And whenever that is, when time is up, are you going to have your skull and soul “safe” nestled into a space? Done and just pray the board will get finished before time is up? Or perhaps you might consider to be out ON the board, finding space for all the other pieces? Since you know your space is marked out, saved for you, and you know how to hop into it at the last minute… Well perhaps it would behoove you to work on the other pieces, to help God… Especially since time could be short or time could be long…  Be busy and help God work on their souls by sharing your unique tool set to support them. Help set as many of these pieces of God’s plan upright so it’s easier for all of us to prepare for eternity… It is God who will grab them to fit them all in before time is up… Before we all pray…

Shareholders, we are ALL shareholders in HIS plan, we all have a stake… We can work for the company or wait gathering dust while we slowly turn into dust. We can find use for our lives by being out there, working to increase the return on the investment of God’s capital… We can’t finish the job unless we are working in the job…

Who wants to help God?
I DO…
DO YOU?

It’s the plan for us ALL to be in God’s plan.

Settling Your Heart into Jesus’s Hands – and Him Lifting with LOVE

Reading old posts that I wrote in my first years of writing – well, they bring treasured warmth to my heart – how God wants to reach us – how God reached me…

Here is a blessed post from early on but now edited with thankfulness:

Settling Your Heart into Jesus’s Hands, 07Sept2016 and 09FEB2026

I have experienced Jesus awakening me, grabbing my hand to wake me. I have also experienced Jesus raising my whole body from when I lost focus like Peter and started sinking into the water… Jesus not JUST grabbing my hand, but truly picking me up BY MY HEART, by scooping HIS hands under it, lifting me up with LOVE.

I’ve been in the water, Jesus let the water rinse me, then when I rose my hand in surrender, Jesus picked me up to drain me from being too waterlogged and heavy. The water poured in and out, with a cleansing rinse… Jesus made my burdens lighter. 

We need ALWAYS to be the one to let go completely and release our heart into HIS hands, let it sink low into protective custody… To shelter in Christ is divine. 

Rest your heart, you’ve traveled so far, it’s OK to be weary… Rest your tired soul, settle in…

Jesus came to raise us up to hold us up so we could hone in on the focus we need to make it thru life. Jesus came not to judge the world, but to save it (John 3:17).

Let your heart nestle down into Jesus’s hands… Wholly and solidly we surrender our selves into HIS supporting arms, let your body sigh and let your soul rest into love. Let your heart nestle in, surrender into the protective shield, wear Jesus on your heart as your armor of God. Feel your whole heart in contact with His gentle yet strong hands.

We need to make it thru life, but we will find salvation wearing the bloodshed from Christ, and only then we find ourselves living the life of the good news, in life everlasting.

Please Lord, when we are sinking, let the cleansing living water of Jesus rinse thru our hearts.  Please Lord, pick us up to drain us from our waterlogged and heavy lives. Please Lord, scoop us up, lifting our hearts with Your hands. Lifting us into salvation…

Lifting us with LOVE.

Hope is not Wishful Thinking

I am traveling, so prewriting about my favorite topics:

HOPE is not just a whimsy – not just wishful thinking – but HOPE is a Holy Spirit gift of knowing prophetically and really and reality of Jesus having been, done, doing, going to do. HOPE is to strengthen and encourage – filling you with Joy – that is what the devotion stated – a direct retelling of the scriptures in the Jesus Calling book by Sarah Young. HOPE is an anchor for the soul, as the Hebrews letter wrote – encouraging us in what we can’t see but we know – and that we know from deep within us not just the thoughts of the day.

Hope is being spiritually alive in the ultimate destination so then a benefit is the being OK in temporary situations. Hope is meant to tap into that “wondrous Joy” – and JOY is knowing HOPE. Both are brought to you by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

And HOPE is JOY and JOY is HOPE in the HOLY SPIRIT showing the WAY…

Jesus Calling: December 15 by Sarah Young: Written as if Jesus speaking direct:
Your longing for heaven is good, because it is an extension of your yearning for Me. The hope of heaven is meant to strengthen and encourage you, filling you with wondrous Joy. Many Christians have misunderstood this word hope, believing that it denotes wishful thinking. Nothing could be further from the truth! As soon as I became your Savior, heaven because your ultimate destination. The phrase hope of heaven highlights the benefits you can enjoy even while remaining on earth. This hope keeps you spiritually alive during dark times of adversity; it brightens your path and heightens your awareness of My Presence. My desire is that you may overflow with hope by the great power of the Holy Spirit.

God Wants You to Know You in Him, Genesis 32

I am travelling and therefore writing ahead of time. I hope you are blessed today.

This summary below is from a teaching that was done at a conference by Pastor Joe of Philadelphia’s Calvary Chapel. WOW – always a great message – and especially he was speaking about Jacob and wrestling with God and being transformed by God – being renamed by God – being blessed by God. We perhaps ask to be understood for who we are – and perhaps we wrestle – but with GOD, we are whom HE deems us to be – we are LOVED. We are loved flaws and all – and then we are led to be better – and led to be changed – and led to be His – mostly WE ARE LOVED. 

I underlined few extra special phrases below – that Jacob, the schemer, has come to the end of his scheming – that Jacob the one who was running way from the Lord found out that the Lord was pursuing Him always – that God is PATIENT with us – God wants the best for us! And what IS the best? Well that IS GOD!

Please read this summary of the teaching – may you be blessed by God finding you today. God wants you to know you IN HIM. Him in you and you in Him.

“Jacob’s name is changed  here; [he’s] going to be called now ‘governed by God’.  That’s  what every one of us  wants  this evening.  We may kick, we may wrestle, we may scream, but somehow when we  look into  His face,  we say, “Lord,  I want to be governed by you.”

Pastor Joe Focht explained that 400 years after Jacob’s all-night wrestling match, Moses would write, Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank (Genesis 32:32, KJV). Joe pointed out, “Which is not part of God’s law, but it’s [Jewish] tradition. I come to this portion of Scripture, like so many places; I look and think, Lord, why did you put this here? What is it? As a well-respected and admired teacher, Joe’s impactful message was Wednesday evening’s capstone to the conference at CC Golden Springs, CA.  

And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.  Genesis 32:24  

“It begins by saying, ‘And Jacob was left alone, and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.’ I think what a plague of loneliness is in our culture today,” shared Joe.  Noting America’s great expenditure on medications for loneliness, fear, and depression, he described how a believer’s place of loneliness—a sanctified loneliness—is of the Lord. “It’s something that He brings about because there are certain things that are only settled there.”  

And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.  Genesis 32:25  

Having sent his wives, children, servants, and flocks before him to his brother Esau, Jacob was now alone in the dark—in the quiet. “All of a sudden, somebody’s got a hold of him. The Lord initiates; Jacob … resists. He wrestles,” Joe remarked. He described the loneliness and isolation that sometimes comes into a believer’s life. “You can sit in a room full of people and feel very lonely, very isolated. Nobody knows what [you’re] going through. Nobody knows what [you’re] struggling with in [your] marriage … what’s going on with [your] kids … nobody understands what [you are] feeling.” Joe encouraged the audience that there is a divine side to that aloneness, that only believers have the blessing that comes when the Lord wrestles us “in that solitary alone place, [with] no desire to humiliate me. And He is patient. He wrestles until morning, and He will touch those things and dislocate them.”  

And he [angel of the Lord] said, ‘Let me go, for the day breaketh.’ And he [Jacob] said, ‘I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. Genesis 32:26  

Jacob went from wrestling to clinging. “It’s [in the Book of] Hosea that tells us that it was in weeping and tears that Jacob prevailed. … It says he took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength, he had power. He [Jacob] contended with God. He had power over the angel. … He prevailed,” explained Joe.  

And he said unto him, ‘What is thy name?’ And he said, ‘Jacob.’ Genesis 26:27  

 Suggesting Jacob had come to the end of himself, Joe relayed, “And Jacob says, ‘My name, heel catcher, conniver, deceiver. I’ve been wrestling for years. Ask Esau. Ask my blind father. Ask Leah, my wives, and kids. My name is Jacob. I can’t wrestle anymore; I can only hang on. I can’t lie. I’m at the end here.’ And graciously then he said, ‘I want a blessing.’”  

And he said, ‘Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.’  Genesis 32:28  

In an exceptional teaching moment, Joe reveals, “The KJV says, “for as a prince you [Jacob] have prevailed”. The word prince is not in the Hebrew. And people try to say Israel means prince of God. … The idea is ordered of God. … And Jacob’s name is changed here. You’ll no longer be called Jacob.  You’re going to be called now governed by God. And that’s what every one of us wants this evening. And we may kick, we may wrestle, we may scream, but somehow when we look into His face, somehow when we realize just with His touch, He’s kind of lovingly breaking us down.”  

And Jacob asked him, and said, ‘Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.’ And he said, ‘Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?’ And he blessed him there.  Genesis 32:29  

As he announced to the crowd how central this verse is for those who were present, Joe admitted, “I came expecting … to hear from the Lord. And it tells us here; the Lord blessed him [Jacob] there. The Lord drew him to himself. The Lord wanted him to see his problem wasn’t Isaac. It wasn’t Esau. It wasn’t Laben. It was that He was wrestling with him [Jacob]. That’s where the crux of the matter was all along. … The place of blessing is the place of crippling. Gently, incredibly tender. God Almighty, [is] able to touch something in our life and dislocate anything that would keep us from His blessing, from His guidance. He initiates. He does it.”  

And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. Genesis 32:30-31  

Because Jacob saw God face to face, he called the place Peniel. Joe asked, “What was it like as he began to see the face of the One he was wrestling with? When you and I are face to face with Him, every other problem is minimized because what comes into focus is who you are. God never says to you, What about that pastor down the road? What about this guy? What about your wife? What about your husband?When you are in that much light, face to face with Him, it’s What’s your name?  

Joe invited the crowd into a time of reflection: “I don’t want to leave here unchanged. I want to leave governed by God. I want to be clinging onto Him, because I realize it’s Him working in my life. It’s you, Lord. I’m not letting go tonight until you bless me.”  

Joe urged, “If you feel led and you just want to say, ‘All right, Lord, I don’t want to leave here [as] Jacob. I’m going to leave here [as] Israel—governed by God,’ I’m going to ask you just to come up. … Come by yourself. … Just you and Him.” As people gathered in agreement, Joe prayed, “You’re drawing us deliberately, Lord, to change our name, to consecrate us, to make us see You face to face, to be overwhelmed with Your glory and Your love and Your healing, Your forgiveness, Your kindness, Your joy, that we would leave, Lord, governed willingly, Lord, by you. Lord, forgive us for all the things we’ve held onto, the things we brought here…. We let go of them, Lord, and we cling to you.”

Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom. And he commanded them, saying, “Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”

Then Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies. Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children. For You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”

So he lodged there that same night, and took what came to his hand as a present for Esau his brother: two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals. Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.” And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?’ then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ” So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

Wrestling with God

And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. He took them, sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had. Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”

But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!”

So He said to him, “What is your name?”

He said, “Jacob.”

And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.”

And He said, “Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He blessed him there.

So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.

Set Your Mind on Things Above – Blessed Reprise Post to Post – about DISTRACTION

I have timed out upcoming posts for the next week or so – I am going on vacation and not taking my computer – and wow – so much to prep – but I know pre-prepping the devotions to post are a blessing. 

I know that you know that writing AND sharing is a blessing to me – and this post is an “reprise” – fancier term than a “rerun” – but so important back then – about distractions… and about a problem I had to wait through and I did and it is done and gone now…

So as I start this vacation – please pray for the overstuffed suitcase and me carrying it on vacation (and in life).

Set Your Mind on Things Above” – that is a great Epiphany scripture too…

Distraction, Sep 2018 – A piece I’ve been meaning to write for my whole life…

Distraction should become focus.

In my anxiety, I know I am human – troubled, just uneasy, scared, worried, ugh…

In my Lord, I know I am HIS – I really don’t need to know anything else – because in being HIS I am always in HIS LOVE

I already know the truth – I already know God’s answer to all my anxiety – but I need to get the rest of me to get there – I need to feel that peace too…

Here is the answer before all problems existed and the answer once problems arise: “Set your mind on things above.”

I’m not usually anxious but I’m miserable in angst for a particular problem – but there’s nothing I can do at this very moment until a certain day – a day that’s a long way off – therefore I can’t get rid of the burden, nor should I – I’m going to hold on to this issue and yet there’s no reason to burden others, so I guess I have to keep working on problems and tasks at hand, not the mental break or refreshing moment that I want, but I have to deal…. in life we have to deal… for all God’s timing, this angst makes me distracted from my normal angst which was upsetting enough – I pray God to distract me from me… I know I am a complainer when it comes to comparing my angst to HIS greatness!

God distracts us by what He attracts us to – in order to “set your mind on things above”…

Talking about my issues it does seem little to complain about, but big to me in this moment – and yes I am in the disconnect area right now – even though I can see peace ahead, but I’m not there yet…

One place I know to focus is on remembering and praying about other friends’ problems instead of mine –  I should clam up about my issues and keep moving… and yes also I should be looking at God’s problem of this broken world – I should speak up instead and take the time to help Him – to tell of Him – yes, we are to spend our time going to God –  working for God – that is how the peace gets pieced back together.

In truth, we should spend ALL our time piecing peace together.

In truth, I can see God sending signs to distract me from me – and attract me to Him.

I pray to not to run into bad times to shock me into counting my blessings – but the world is still a broken place… I am not at peace with the world, nor should I be – worse yet we should not become complacent.

I appreciate hearing and seeing God distract me… “set your mind on things above”…

This morning I hear summer bugs, I hear my hermit crab crunching and clunking his shell, I hear the quiet but stirring of my sleeping teenage babies – do I need anything else to be thankful for?

I ask and know the most important question: Do I hear God? I do, I don’t need anything else but God here…

I have known that God is in all things – I have peace even if I can’t piece it together right now – I am the distraction – God is the peace.

Right now, I hear birds singing and have a warm place to sit. Right now, I hear the hum of the highway, even on a Sunday morning, there are others working much earlier and much harder than me – God is humming while He works us for His peace. Actually, He whistles as He works – that whistling wind will catch your ear – God will too…

I hear in rewind, in my head, my conversations this past week with others who have far worse off issues than me – I often think that God distracts us from our own problems by getting us to remember others… God distracts us from our own problems, we can also remember others being given the joyous opportunities that make the rest of the world fade away by them living in the moment…

Life is best lived in the present- the present is a gift… set your mind on things above and listen to the Lord for clues to discover that path today… we can only follow the Lord if we listen for Him…

I hope to work my peace out by writing – it’s a process – my peace and God’s peace is a process – if I stop to observe my progress then I can see that God placed me in the process to work for Him…

Let’s start the day by looking for His distractions…

His distractions should be our focus.

NO DISHES On This VACATION, No Grumbling Either – JUST SHINING, Philippians 2

I am pre-writing – planning for being away on vacation – and this seems so fitting to write about for a time I hope to be on vacation with no dishes and hopefully no grumbling… SO instead I will post it today – a rambling post from old – but the summary is to praise the Lord over grumbling. Also I have to say that time will pass – and we will get through – and life keeps moving – and so we best praise over grumbling

So on a Sunday (by the time I thought about sending this next Sunday – I was already into Monday of this week – today) – and thinking on how to act on a Sunday – it is a day that we are to be not grumbling but PRAISING GOD. Well, that is everyday too I hope…  And the scripture I was re-reading and re-reading (which I included in a rant type post years and years ago), well that scripture is about NOT grumbling – Philipians 2.- Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.

What I re-read now is the part about holding firmly to the word of life – that is piety in prayer and praise – that is (from the previous verse by Paul) us to continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.- THAT IS US HOLDING ONTO JESUS.

I can say that we are to feel so blessed – always – because Jesus, Lord, saved us and saved me – and that I know He won’t lose us – even if I lose myself… 

And we can feel blessed for multiple things – like well, I was just thinking about a mundane but not blessing in my life – my dishwasher – yeah – we have always said “I love my dishwasher” – and I ALSO say “I LOVE MY DISHWASHER!” today – and I do splurge, I must tell you, I add 2 pods into each wash run – yeah – just do… And the dishes? so so clean… I am grateful…)

ANYWAY – blessings are not always in the things – actually blessings is most strongly found in the guidance… Blessings in Jesus being with us.

So – about the dishwasher (and the salvation because Jesus is our biggest soul washer) – I bring you a rambling post #338 from years ago – suitable for a Sunday of praise and a Monday of chores – praise that God said no grumbling and just hold on…

This writing below – pure processing – and it includes – you guessed it – the dishwasher – and it includes prepping for vacation… And talks about blessings of busy – blessings of having a house and things to do – blessings of burdens which are busy blessings all the same…

I told myself that I would not delete wacky posts from my first writing and this I did not!

So – Here’s my devotion from 9 years ago – (wow that is a good run on a great dishwasher): #338 = from 2017 “Journaling”… Wakefulness in early morning ALWAYS was calling me to read scripture and to write… Busyness a privilege not a chore… Writing is therapy, never a chore… God is ALWAYS a blessing, not a chore… Working out our salvation is essentially talking to Jesus, surrendering to Jesus, and accepting His Sacrifice to save – asking forgiveness – and then giving praise.

Dishes, 17Jan 2017  

This is the perfect verse for the dishes… Philippians: Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.

I really don’t mind doing the dishes, it’s just when there is a week’s worth waiting for me, well, I think of all the other things I could be doing… And thinking…. And Yeah….

So, actually, I don’t mind doing the dishes at all… I actually don’t mind doing chores, I don’t mind hard work, I am blessed and relieved to have lots of skills and be efficient with my time…. Even God wakes me up to write and God is VERY efficient at using my time and my sleep… and I don’t mind… I don’t mind at all, GOD… You have fulfilled more in my life and for after my death then in my WILDEST DREAMS… I don’t mind, put me to work God, YOUR work…

But dishes? Are they and the laundry and the cooking and paying bills and… are they more than just chores? I think so… I KNOW so… I think they are there to prove that I have a LIFE… That I am BLESSED to own a house, to have beautiful children… To have mouths to feed… I think so much of what we grumble about – we are actually blessed with… I think those dishes are both there to remind me that I need to get back to buying paper plates AND to appreciate there WAS food in the house to make the mess… (And also to give me the opportunity to thank and pray for my earthly handy house carpenter who replaced the old dishwasher in the spring, blessing me with installing an expensive kicka$$ dishwasher on a damage sale for a fraction of the cost… Who also is the only reason this house hasn’t crumbled because of termite damage repaired… Yeah, praising God for HIS blessings of both earthly and heavenly carpentry…)

Of course dishes are chores, but also mean I have an opportunity to be in my house and not “on the go”… I of course multitask – cooking healthy food AND practicing my praise singing while I do dishes… And it’s time to think… Time to ponder the greatness of God…

All my chores yesterday were for others, which turns out were/are for me too…. Working for others who bless me…. Labors of LOVE: cookie booth work, six different stores for groceries and essentials, and I barely remember what… I do remember that it was peppered with blessed people interactions and that it was all done efficiently and rapidly and ONLY on six hours sleep…

Today, Sunday, will be the same… BLESSED to be busy… these are all activities for me because they ARE for God’s greater purpose – to show HIM working IN me to keep me upright and smiling… In the meantime, Sundays are a great way to restart the week: family time, church, band practice and praise time, church family time, lunch with the girls, more kid family time, cookie booth set up with crazy girl scout moms… Blessed to be WAY too busy to be stressed…

No grumbling… Chores… Just ride the waves of today’s tasks… Soon I will take some vacation days, take care of myself… Take time for me – and time to ponder the greatness of God…

No grumbling, God provides life, just go live it…

LIVE it, LOVE it, for God.

Magi on the Move, a Prayer for Epiphany

(A prayer for the Sunday service before Epiphany)

Won’t you please pray with me:

Lord, Thank you for coming into this world for us, for pursuing us, for finding us where we are, and for Loving us. 

Yes Lord, we think of the story of the reverent Magi in front of the baby Jesus – and prayerfully we also must realize that it took them a long time to get there – and it took a long time, the rest of their lives, to continually witness about You. You, Lord, were with them all the time and you sent a star to guide and Your Word to counsel them.

You send these helps to us too, Lord. But Lord it often takes us a long time for us to prayerfully look into these things – to realize You and of You – to keep going – to see the LIGHT and to SHARE the Light. How many times Lord, You have led us – brought us – held us – showed us. Thank You for that and may we keep being led.  We may have wanted to step aside from such constant watching for You and Your works – to do our own thing – to stop caring and stop knowing about your help. 

And Lord, how often You have told us to take another route – to step away from the evil – but we continued in our own weaknesses to disobey. So please, Lord, help us strengthen in You, restore our energy in You. Lord, in this renewed year and renewed spiritual journey, help us number our days and keep serving and keep believing.  Help us Lord to look into these great things of scripture and especially of You in our hearts, in this EPIPHANY time – for our own Epiphanies and journeys…  

And Lord, be our Beacon of Light for us to keep walking in a broken world to be part of Your Peace – to keep looking for where You lead us – to keep trusting – to keep knowing – to keep these revelations in our heart and always in our praise. 

We Thank You, Lord God for what You have done. We thank You, Lord God, for sending the Light of Jesus into the world for us and for all. We thank You Lord in the Holy Spirit for moving us and giving us this ability to share Your Love.

Lord, let us open our hearts and lift up our eyes and look for You.

The Magi Visit the Messiah
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

“I’ll do a bit for anybody” but JUST BE YOURSELF

OK – I talked about schedules yesterday and wow got much stuff done at work Friday before I nip and tuck things away before vacation Tuesday.  So motivated before vacation to prep and pack all the way up to the last second…  But, well, yesterday I missed one appointment – and then during a hockey game that evening I was distracted by my phone and missed a whole goal just 25 feet in front of me…  Don’t blink… Life moves fast, especially in hockey… And you can’t dwell on missed things – like we would encourage a goalie to not get down on themselves for every goal that gets past them – their disappointment is another player’s gain – funny how life in sports is – and life in general… Just “a long strange trip it’s been” to quote the Grateful Dead song.

But honestly we are bound to miss things – mess up – forget things – misinterpret – and just oops it… YET, Life moves on…

This morning I am enjoying a Saturday morning to pre-write some posts for when I am away on vacation – to get to 10 things done on my endless list – to work on some more Christmas cards (I finally have written some and have more to do) – and then I have a re-appointment for that phone call for the person I was supposed to call yesterday – let’s not oops that again…  I also have other open-ended things to do today with friends and family – but really I need to also get into that “I only have so much time here to get some things done and others won’t get done or will wait…” mentality… (OH that is the scripture that landed on my eyes after my post yesterday about structure: Help us Oh Lord to number our days”)… Well, back to vacation prep: OH YEAH – like I need to get to a store for last minute things and to figure out what I want to wear to the wedding – and should figure out my winter boots situation…  You know those last minute things…

I digress – I am even 2 hours late writing a post for today – but since that is my own scheduled schedule with God to write – I don’t worry so much on a Saturday – and sometimes – often – always – God is gracious with us... Yet in preparing for my trip, I just pre-posted a piece of writing that I read about Jacob and how God was always ready to pursue Him and find him finding HIM – Jacob finding God – and God blessing Jacob after they struggled in a physical wrestling (Genesis 32). And a discussion between Jacob and God is like that in the quiet alone times that we are not alone and God can work on us and with us and simply be with us… I know we have times to be excited and moving all about – and we have these quiet times too – well, God bless and blesses them all…

Meanwhile, back to the “to-do” lists, during Christmas card addressing, I have been watching an “I Love Lucy” spoof on a Bob Hope TV Special – with all the normal characters but rearranged – Bob as Desi – Desi as Fred – and a seal in the closet (random)… But Fred is not there (at least not yet) – meanwhile I remember that in my favorite movie “Miracle on 34th Street” that the judge’s politico gentleman is that character from I Love Lucy – Fred. These stars were bit part people and full blown leading actors too. And that is us too – we might be a bit part in someone’s life – even at the hockey game crowded yet generous with each other – or yelling at each other instead – perhaps it is not all about us – it is just a bit part we have in that moment in life and sometimes things get past us and we must move on – try to do better and move on.

I do appreciate how funny good these old 1950’s shows were and are – because they are the first to show the gags without them being repetitive – and they are truly funny people – and they also let us see the slip ups and realness of the fakeness of TV. One such video I “rabbit – hole” was led to is a blooper by Lucille Ball – FUNNY as she messes up and is just a natural comedian with an audience – and says (after she messes up) “I’ll do a bit for anybody” with the emphasis on ANYBODY – being Bob Hope…  Yes, it is extra hilarity that she’s putting herself out there generously and yet begrudgingly – she is just doing a bit part in life: https://youtu.be/5otQotVeTM8?si=wepTaWbqWDKSb-Bp

But isn’t that also a good goal in life? Accept our “bit parts” and keep going –  flaws and flows – just keep going – and always be real. One management book I read said to have “Intellectual honesty” – and if you can’t make something work – don’t lie about it – just be honest and move forward… BE YOURSELF… 

Doing things for others honestly (and “for anybody” like Lucy says) lets us NOT put on the “schtick” of a bit part – but just being ourselves around others…  So perhaps it is better to be more carefree in our living – CAREFREE – not careless – but carefree and just be open to roll with the punches – just hop along life for the ride…  Be that person that God needs you to be next to the person that wasn’t expecting His grace through you.  Don’t be careless – but be more careFREE – and in that mentality – “I’ll do a bit for anybody”… 

Well, the end of this rambling post means I need to get back to more structure of stuff to get done – but also allow my mind to re-arrange into vacation mode – I could write for days and days about my excitement for the trip but I just need to get on it – I am looking forward mostly to just being myself…  I highly recommend that mentality for every one – just do a bit – do a lot – do a little – but just be yourself!

God Knows We Need Structure In Our Lives

It’s January 2nd – I woke up with ONE word on my brain – STRUCTURE.

This is a WISDOM word – God KNOWS we need STRUCTURE in our lives – and we know that too.

Again and AGAIN this last week that word has come up – whether it was talking to my aunt (whose birthday is today) – she has lived at the family farmstead her whole life and talks often about her farm duties – and how cows needed the structure in a milking schedule – and how she puts in a structure to her day which really has no demands and so could be lonely but she keeps busy with her self-assigned tasks of certain cleaning – or plant watering – or something that is so universal to many Americans – watching the Price is Right at 11am with the local news on TV after that. My Grandma had us watching Card Sharks or Wheel of Fortune before The Price is Right. YES STRUCTURE – even the game shows have a structure of certain time for introductions – getting all the games in – the big wheel has the same order of the numbers – the hosts showed up each time to our homes – and even at night now Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy – who could imagine how important TV became to structure…  One certainty I can state is that although I don’t want to give TV more credit than it is due – because it can waste your time – there is NO show aside from maybe the superbowl that my family sat down together and watched – and even the superbowl it was just for the commercials – which you know come in on SCHEDULE.

God Knows KIDS need SCHEDULE – as I know many a grandma who states that and then implements that into kids lives – and teachers too – from circle time to snack time to rest time – how crucial it is. Structure is good for everything from the digestive system – to the learning institutions semester schedules – to paying the mortgage on time – to figuring out when to put the recycling out. My mom has been retired many years and she has put in a soft schedule for herself even if much of it is open schedule – every day is Saturday she says… (She knew the 8-4 or 9-5 workweek for decades)… She now makes a good schedule for herself, has volunteering every other week on Tuesdays, she has monthly lunch bunches, she has a calendar next to the phone for organizing. My family on the farm used to write on the calendar in retrospective ways – the temperature – the events of the day if someone visited – if a baby was born – etc. Cleaning up the farmhouse I found some of the 50 plus years of calendars kept – paper year after year provided by the pharmacy. Farm life included paying attention to outside life too.

(Honestly since very few of us live that farm life anymore – and buy our food from the stores, we seem like we should have little to complain about. The one thing that crosses my 89yr old aunt’s mind almost EVERY MORNING – is thankfulness that she doesn’t have to go out at 5am to go get the cows ready for milking. She has not for nearly 60 years but that thankfulness is still fresh on her mind like their fresh milk)

How is our lives FRESH each morning? We know that God’s Mercies are fresh each morning…  THANK GOD! “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lam 3:22-23

My balancing of life is scheduled even if it seems chaotic to you and to me – I plan – LORD-WILLING I pray – and then I plan – I buy plane tickets and concert tickets and TRUST the Lord picking my schedule – I have certain tasks and then love UNSTRUCTURED time – which if I schedule to get my other stuff done – I give myself this gift.  If I don’t, if we don’t, we would either never stop working and run dry of creativity OR we would use so much creativity we wouldn’t buckle down to get things done – like general health and house things. In other words – put in structure for yourself or else someone else might (and even in nursing homes they LOVE their structure – meals, bingo, etc)… (and I just now looked at Facebook before writing (which I TRY not to do so it doesn’t ruin my writing schedule of early morning) – and what was the first post I saw? My cousin talking about the structured craft projects she did this past year which she said has been really good for her mental health… Yeah STRUCTURE.)

I think you get the point now – I see this year that we need to remember our STRUCTURE and although we look at life through a 2026 lens, we can see forever past and future truths of the Lord’s Plan in structuring our existence. If we don’t look to the Lord, He will come looking for us – and therefore He has put a STRUCTURED book in front of us – the BIBLE – it has lots of structure that perhaps you could say that people put in it – but the longevity of it suggests that God breathed it in HIS Structure and we simply decided where to put the ribbons in the hole-punched copies. Although each scripture section stands alone – we can learn the structure of scripture to help us to understand it – the background – the purpose – and how to use it in our lives.

Case in point – the psalms are organized by people but surely with God’s blessing. The books in the old testament have parallel stories for reinforcement of understanding – the book of Isaiah is said to be a mini bible – the Torah part of the 5 books of Moses is appreciated by Jewish people still today thousands of years later. The structure was put in for the Law – the Prophets – the historical books etc – structure was already in place before Christ came to earth as a man. And even the structure was put forth by a structural meeting of scholars from just a few years after Christ for the New Testament and  Jesus Himself came to fulfill prophecy – which God STRUCTURED ahead of time. The gospels are parallel with their own independent way to reach certain people.

If there is one thing I know about God – is that HE HAS HIS OWN STRUCTURE – we approach sometimes the understanding but really how can we – we only approach and never fully know how it all works – I mean how can one structurally both make the snow and make each snowflake unique – only God – only God…  How can people be anatomically similar and not – and how can we understand people generally and yet know every person is unique – Only God could put that structure and understand it into His World…  How can God? God is God and we are not. But structure is something that God HAS – yet His LOVE allows for the failures and forgiveness – the messes and mercy – the gumming up of situations and HIS GRACE.

SO – not a big surprise but STRUCTURE is a good word for this new year – keep not a restrictive hand on yourself but a structure that allows you to thrive in a form that gives both boundaries and opportunities…  (We like some structure on our adventures too – and work hard so that we can play hard – God knows – God knows…)

God Bless you in 2026 – Let us all start and continue reading more bible – let us all start and continue living our lives – let us all start and continue to reduce our agendas for HIS…  If we are to “lose self” – meaning be less ME ME ME – let us instead FIND life in God – amen amen amen…

Happy New MEMORIES Year 2026!

Love you all! Happy New Year!

I like my new 2026 glow in the dark glasses, they are good for one whole year! And being home for the New Years, if just a couple days, is priceless time. It was wonderful (even if I went to bed at 930pm, LOL, I like a good rest to start 2026). 

I brought pairs of glow in the dark glasses, 3D printed at a craft show, one my mom wore and one pair I wore last night playing scrabble after dinner. She’s seen many more New Years than me. (I will return south later today, ready for a NEW MEMORIES YEAR 2026, I can’t wait!)

I watched the ball drop on replay just now, I saw our town’s buildings lit up as big 2 and big 5 on the hill opposite from our hill, last night, and I remembered that the trees weren’t so tall when I was a kid and we actually ran back and forth from the TV ball drop and the kitchen window watching those numbers change each year. Year after year excitement even if the years blur now. Can’t believe Y2K was over 25 yrs ago either… Life marches on…

Wisdom over wishing might be a good theme for this year 2026. Gain in wisdom and to keep growing. I mean we can look back at 2025 and years and years, like through that kitchen window or TV (or phone screen) and we can take the same well-beaten paths of good memories, hopefully skipping over bad memories, and/or we can take fresh new ones! NEW MEMORIES 2026! Wisdom is looking THROUGH 2026 glasses not at them. 

Look forward to 2026 and look for new memories for this year. (For me I’m appreciating traveling)… we best to MATURE our mentality to be more wise, asking God for priceless wisdom, each day,  ONE DAY AT A TIME, and don’t worry for each day is in HIS Hands. 

As for Jesus, from our gospel of Luke reading as a boy, He Jesus as God never changes, and yet He as human always was, was growing physically and mentally in wisdom and in direction and in strengthening of purpose. 

We can too. We can grow. Jesus grew under God the Father’s favor, and Mary, Jesus’s mother, grew in memories, kept all these wisdoms of memories in her heart… we can too…

Full hearts and to be light on our feet – I pray that for all of us as we approach 2026. May we see and appreciate new memories ahead!
