Sermon – The Body of Christ’s Gifts – Romans 12

Standard

Feb 8 | The Body as Christ’s Presence | Romans 12:3–8

Humble Service in the Body of Christ 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

SERMON:

Many times I have asked myself in this life – “why am I here, Lord?” – how did I get here – what is my purpose in this particular situation – let alone life – and there must be a point for my situation or even times we have thorns in our sides for pain or praise or ???  And surely we all wonder this on occasion. My favorite go-to scripture is James 1 – perseverance – and yes – PRAISE…

We have to remember that God loves us – God saves us – God has a job for us – God is not just making children out of rocks, which He could, but He made us for a purpose – to be loved – to love Him – to serve Him by serving others – and LOVE as we are LOVED… God loves us and God is LOVE so how can He do or be anything else.

The Psalmist of psalm 56 was in despair when He was looking for God to save Him from terrible enemies – “For You have delivered my soul from death. Have You not kept my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the light of the living?” WELL – if God can save people (including us from tragedy over and over again) – and make real miracles all around us – then surely how much MORE  He is able to give us gifts in the first place – to make us into His people – and to equip us with skills to serve – remember that great phrase: God does not call the equipped – He equips the called. YEAH! He will give us what He wants from us – just as He has given us life now and forever – by looking to Him for these gifts.

So today I am talking about what we can give of ourselves – but not because we are being stolen from – or over-achieving – but simply give in HUMBLE SERVICE – like we have these skills/life-direction because God gave us these things – like a potluck of life but much much more divine and much much more ample… God doesn’t make mistakes – so He gave us each gifts – many gifts!!!

Last week in the sermon (given by —-) – she spoke about Paul telling the Corinthians that: There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit – different kinds of service, but the same Lord different kinds of working  given from the Manifestation of the Spirit –  given for the common good –  wisdom, knowledge faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in different kinds of tongues, or the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

And now – we are talking about how Paul did say to the Romans (12:3-8 NIV) – that the Lord has a role for EACH OF US – BECAUSE we are in ONE BODY – of the LORD’S purposes –- about taking stock of your life in faith and realize that we do have the ability to be in Humble Service in the Body of Christ.

REMEMBER THE IN FAITH PART – THAT WE CAN’T JUST SHLUFF OFF THE GIFTS – OR THAT WE ARE NOT WORTHY – BECAUSE IT IS GOD WHO MAKES US WORTHY TO HAVE THESE GIFTS AND USE THEM – AND WE ARE HERE ON EARTH AS PART OF THAT ONE BODY – YES ALL OF US… Remember God uses the term that we are the BRIDE of the Church – being made ready for our Groom.

PAUL WOULD SAY:  think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. —-    in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

And I have slides this morning – props too – but first slides – because I gave a talk previously that pertains so much and wanted to share these imagery prompts again…

Yeah – and I love this image on this first slide – because I loved being in this mix – this is vacation bible school (I think Maker Fun Factory) so many years ago now – maybe almost 10 years ago (life is a blur isn’t it) BUT LIFE IS WITH DISTINCT MOMENTS – AND EACH ONE OF US IN THE BODY OF CHRIST – called together each part to live out a Christian Life. This drone picture is the view from the top – God sees us both together and each individual. And as God knows us inside and out – He has a place for us.

Paul would say in his letter to the first Corinthians: that there is both UNITY and DIVERSITY in the Body verse 12: “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.”

YES – in my next slide – remember UNITY AND DIVERSITY –

I love this photo imagery of all these people together – again a view from the top – WE ALL FIT TOGETHER LIKE PUZZLE PIECES – AND JESUS WILL HUNT ALL THE EARTH AND UNDER THE TABLE FOR THE FALLEN PUZZLE PIECES.

(Point to the slide) The one body of the church is made for love and for work – and includes lay people and clergy who support each other; individuals and groups who can impact society; families for Christian nurture and training; people of all kinds!

Paul says “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ and have put on Christ there is neither Jew or Greek, neither slave nor free, no make and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

And next slide – remembering why: we are here to fulfill the great commission – and there is no quiz but I wanted to bring in these great Greek words for who we are together as the church:

(point to the slide) Koinonia is community  caring and grace filled – where people can find wholeness – Kerygma is how the church proclaims the good news of Jesus – and Diakonia – is how the church shares God’s Grace in acts of love and service – it is a balanced triangle pictured here – community, proclamation, and service.

AND IN MY NEXT SLIDE – WE DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HOW THIS ALL GOES TOGETHER – WE HAVE TO SAY “JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL” – that is how we can do the things we are supposed to do – and are gifted to do – and will love to do

(point to the slide) – as the Body of Christ – we can focus on a need that we see – we should be identifying our gifts –

and we are not in this alone – when you know you have something to share – there is no need to go alone – it is best to see the support of others – and yes – work as a team…

I add the holy spirit dove depiction there because we are NOT doing this on our own steam – we really can and do and want to rely on the Holy Spirit to put us where He wants us to be – where we can be God’s Hands and Feet in the situation – let the Lord place us. One of my favorite songs: “Come Holy Spirit – Fall Afresh on me…”Come Holy Spirit Fall Afresh On Me – Fill Me With Your Power”

AND WHAT ABOUT THIS BODY OF CHRIST – I USE THIS JOKE OF THE OPERATION GAME WHERE YOU TAKE OUT THE PARTS – BUT LET US THINK IN REVERSE – PUT YOUR GIFTS INTO THE BODY OF CHRIST!

Let us remember our specific scripture this morning – we all have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

AND AS FOR A PROP TODAY – I WANT US TO THINK OF THESE GIFTS – how do we figure out our gifts – there are many spiritual gift “inventories” – read Tozer quote:

PROPHESIZING – do you have this gift? I would think it is only a few – but we do see it in the old testament and new testament – and so it must still exist today – Deborah the Judge – whom I appreciate in the old stories was able to tell folks that “God has got this” – and that is my favorite testimony prophesy – God has got this – all of it…

So what about you? Prophesy or SERVING or TEACHING or ENCOURAGING or GIVING or LEADING? How about SHOWING MERCY – WITH CHEER – that is an unique one – really – we have the ability to maybe let someone cut in front of us in line and then let that roll off our shoulders – and be grateful that we have the extra time to have someone go ahead of us – just a simple example – but it happens – and mercy is a big word in God’s vocabulary – mercy is NOT giving us the punishment we deserve – wow – and thank you Jesus for your ability to impart forgiveness and gain us God’s Mercy over our sin and death…

So let us take these gifts in love and do an activity to close with discussion – I have hearts of these gifts – and heart stickies – for you to write on and keep – let us first fill up the cross with our gifts – I handed out the large ones – could folks please affix them to the cross? Acknowledging that God gives us gifts to share and He went all the way to the cross to take our sins away so that we have no reason not to share His goodness of gifts.

[open for discussion and people sharing with each other in the church]

And with the small sticky note hearts – let us take one – and write down both a gift that we believe we have and perhaps one that you feel God is trying to develop in you – bring it out of you – for many reasons – including sharing and being in service to the whole body of all of us – both to the CHURCH known and the people who don’t know JESUS… so write both of them to keep on the heart – and please if you feel led, share… feel free to speak of why – no pressure but a chance to share…  (I will start – with encouragement – that is a gift I realized long ago that God gave me – yes teaching too – but encouragement because I think that people do know what to do just need a little encouragement…  and then for God trying to bring something more out of me – well leadership – I know He pushes me into leadership – I have to take it more often than I do…   OK, how about you???)

Wrap up prayer – Lord – thank you for the opportunity to take stock and take of your Spirit – and share and know and be – thank You Lord for Your Love and Your gifts – and how we are to manifest them totally as a body of Christ!

Thank You Lord for all these beautiful souls here – and for those who couldn’t make it today – and also for the people in the world whom you are calling but ask us to help with this proclamation – these acts of service – and this community – AMEN

Benediction – Please everyone be safe and be warm and share the warmth of the Lord out there with the body parts that we are trying to keep warm in His Love – thank you Lord for this opportunity – may we all realize your blessings – AMEN and have a great day!

Set Aside for LOVE – for Parenting and Teaching the “About to Know Jesus-ers”, Luke 1-2

Standard

People might wonder – how do we know Jesus is Jesus?

Well, in the times of Jesus’s birth, there had been many prophecies but these types of prophets had been silent for hundreds of years. Studied and known – but in a quiet time that God had planned.

Then as promised “when the time was right” – a quote from an early prophecy – the time came. And into motion, the angel was sent to inform the chosen people in Jesus’s close family that He was ON THE WAY!

John the Baptist was clearly sent as a messenger sent to preach and reach the people who were “about to know Jesus-ers” – who were drawn to Him in the desert when he was preaching “repent”. John the Baptist was Jesus’s cousin – their mothers were cousins – and all were dedicated to the Lord.

A key aspect of Christianity is repentance, as John the Baptist preached to people who came to be baptized, asking forgiveness for ways that are not of God, and for trying better. We might say “Your parents taught you well!” when we see someone who is good – and God intended that scenario over and over. Parents and Grandparents – Aunt and Uncles – Godparents and friends – teachers – neighbors – society –  are an extension for the LOVE that God puts into each child’s life. Sharing LOVE is sharing the essence of God. BEING teachers of LOVE is a God-given gift.

So whom came before John the Baptist to raise him up as a child? HIS PARENTS – John’s Mother and Father, Elizabeth and Zacharias. EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE OLD – THEY WERE YOUNG IN GOD’S EYES TO RAISE A CHILD. Zacharias was a priest of the long line of priests and as a shepherd to the people, he was SURPRISED to have an ANGEL visit him – surprised to be shepherded –  and SURPRISED to be told he would raise a child – and then corrected by an angel who said “DON’T DOUBT” – God intends this season to open up and for the Messiah to come – and for your son – your child to be a holy messenger on earth –  But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord,..”

And the angel Gabriel (yes the same angel who would visit Mary later) – told Zacharias to raise his son John in a certain way – to raise him SET ASIDE – even with a role model of great prophet Elijah – that John would be the voice in the wilderness that God SETS ASIDE: John “shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah,‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

In the time that was approaching – the time that was right – John would be born and then be tasked with turning the hearts of the people towards their God – a task we also can achieve by shepherding people, raising up our flocks right – and by staying true to the mission God puts in front of us. And yet – God does not require us to go it alone – we have multitudes of support in our communities and families and of course we have GOD and the multitudes of angels and the HOLY SPIRIT to bring JESUS up in the hearts of each of His children. GOD DOES NOT LEAVE ANYTHING TO CHANCE!!!  And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”  And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, andwas sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”

May we partake in this holy life in raising our children and also raising the whole population of God’s Children by being HIS MESSENGER of LOVE – of teaching – of being dedicated – and listening to the scriptures ourselves to repent and restore our dedication to God.

When God sends an ANGEL – He means it.

When God sends a Prophet – He tells it.

When God sends JESUS – HE LIVES IT.

SET ASIDE FOR LOVE.

AMEN

Luke 1-2 NKJV
Dedication to Theophilus
Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

John’s Birth Announced to Zacharias
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

***But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.

And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.” ***

And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple. But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless.

So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house. Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”

Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.”

Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth
Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

The Song of Mary
And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
And holy is His name.
And His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm;
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
He has helped His servant Israel,
In remembrance of His mercy,
As He spoke to our fathers,
To Abraham and to his seed forever.”

And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.

Birth of John the Baptist
Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her.

Circumcision of John the Baptist
So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias. His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.”

But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called.

And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zacharias’ Prophecy
Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel,
For He has visited and redeemed His people,
And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
In the house of His servant David,
As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets,
Who have been since the world began,
That we should be saved from our enemies
And from the hand of all who hate us,
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers
And to remember His holy covenant,
The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:
To grant us that we,
Being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
Might serve Him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

Christ Born of Mary
And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Glory in the Highest
Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Circumcision of Jesus
And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

Jesus Presented in the Temple
Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Simeon Sees God’s Salvation
And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”

And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna Bears Witness to the Redeemer
Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

The Family Returns to Nazareth
So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

The Boy Jesus Amazes the Scholars
His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.

Jesus Advances in Wisdom and Favor
Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
