I really find this passage from 1st John 2:3-11 is a good pause for us to think about not hating, or fueling the fire of hate, fitting for election season, unrest in pockets, and general ugh. Wow. Just wow. Let’s do love instead. If we only focused on the work of the Lord thru us, we would have less time to hate. Distraction is the deed of the devil. Derision is feeding the delight of the divider.
Grumbling is not a good thing, but an appropriate word for what we see on our Facebook feeds, TVs and mail. I didn’t know anything about a particular local candidate except that people mailing these flyers harbor hate for her. Negative publicity or fear fueling is just wrong.
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. 1st John 2:9-11
It is not bad that we debate topics, but mob mentality is very easy to cultivate, too easy. True that I don’t like some candidates, opposite to my thinking on certain topics, but that’s for debate not hate. Yes, just like the dried paint I just cleaned up, and oh yeah the cat surprises behind the furniture, these grumblings and attacks of mudslinging stain the microcosms we live in, how is it on the next day we are going to forget the flinging? Not likely. How will we teach our children to be polite, maybe bite their tongue for keeping the peace. And focus on not making it a messier world than it already is. Dump the divides and clean up the causes.
I don’t post political humor or commentary on Facebook, even if I have strong opinions, I don’t want any friends blocking me. I want to show them happy posts, my kid photos, trips, and of course the cat.
A particular Facebook post this week was like a cat catastrophe ON the furniture, not behind it. Ignore, block, report, or comment? That is the modern question. I have “snoozed” so many it’s not funny.
My prayers are for not for unity in worldly things, but unity in love. My prayers are against dribbles and deluges of hate stirring. Verify, validate, vote. Clean it up not clutter life with crud.
Don’t let the darkness overcome, we have an overcomer in Jesus, our Light, who wants to shine love thru us. What we miss being mired in mud, oh what we gain in grace both given and received!
Let’s love first, ask questions second.
1st John 2 Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them
