It’s Quiet Uptown, Keep Living, (and eat the roses), 10-11SEP trip to NYC

Standard

I am now home from a last minute decision of taking a long-thought-out trip – I went to NYC for one night. So glad I went – so glad to be home… (long thought out is only like 2 weeks in my fast-paced thinking LOL)

I realized it would be a good chance to combine three things – go to a Yankees game – go see my friend (of course) – and go to Ground Zero… September 11th is 25 years ago, wow.

I felt God said it was OK to go ( I decided only that morning for sure) and so to go to Ground Zero for this anniversary was a good place for me – without going on the day of sept 11th but on the 10th – it WAS beautiful and meaningful… I sat under the tree there – and I felt yes, it was right and it was good for me to be there for my processing and praying – and remembering… I took a good moment – and my picnic lunch – to sit at the waterfalls at Ground Zero, especially resting under the big pear tree, which was removed from ground zero, rehabilitated, and placed back as a “survivor tree”. There was life teaming all around, between the people and the pigeons, and these cute squirrels, which attracted many people’s attention. Especially as one stole a flower right out of a memorial wreath, climbed up the tree and started eating it. Wow. A person was also feeling crackers to the very friendly squirrels. It was adorable and soothing, a reminder that LIFE continues… Love the pic I got. Life continues – stop and eat the roses. (And smell them)

Then I walked across the bottom of Manhattan to Pier 11 – and the info person was SO NICE – and helped me determine the shorter of the two ways to get to Pier 90 – where then I walked up to my friend’s place. Trust me that $4.50 for riding a ferry on the top deck was far superior than $3.50 underground on a subway for the same 50 minutes. And the views – wow – make sure to see my photos at the link below. The boat next to my ferry was “Seas the Day” – yes life continues – stop and smell the roses and compare them.

So I combined my game trip and 9-11 grounds trip with seeing my friend (fellow graduate from yikes almost 30 years ago) – and I really enjoyed seeing him – and we ate sweets and had lunch – and walked around – and talked and talked. Stop and smell and talk about the roses.

I had thought about this particular promo for the Yankees game sept 10th – get a Yankees jersey branded with my alma mater, I like it! (And as a kid I appreciated that I was from NY and assumed everyone was watching Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner fighting and just was a Yankees person…  So thus I say Yankees is my favorite team even if the others have a much more fun and active stadium… I digress…)

My favorite interaction was a beautiful woman jogging by as I walked, saw my shirt and yelled out her class year! We had a fabulous conversation, really it IS a small world, and my ‘quest’ for connection was truly satiated. That was sufficient and fulfilling even before the game. Stop and smell and know to mention all about roses.

And was good to be close to the apartment after the game – it is quiet uptown and nice to stay over in convienence… People loved that the game was a winning game and I enjoyed chatting with some folks after moving from the 400 level cheap seats to the 300 level cooler seats to the 200 better view seats… 200 level was more rowdy and fun. The higher seats were still a good view but the people were more subdued. Stop and smell the roses but don’t be afraid to find other roses other places.

“It’s Quiet Uptown” – that is a line from Alexander Hamilton musical – but that is true – it is pretty quiet uptown and this morning (Sept 11th)  we went to Alexander Hamiltion’s home of about 2 years before he died (and his wife’s Eliza’s home for nearly 30 years) – it is on the national park list – and the area is amazingly hilly and rocky – and they MOVED this house TWICE including lifting it over a church in 2008 WOW! the movie is amazing. *check it out on youtube* – and the house now has gardens full of roses… Stop and smell and ADMIRE the roses.

The reason for the song “It’s Quiet Uptown” – was that the Hamiltons were raising their many children (both adopted and born Hamiltons) in a big house after the oldest son was killed in a duel. It is a poignant part of the musical that states it is all about the processing – and it is also where one has to move on – and keep living… Stop and plant new roses – and remember those we have lost…

It takes a lot of processing – for them – for us – for us on Sept 11th – for life – for death – for life… Life is not always a rose garden…

It was also quiet uptown on this day – as it was the beginning of Rosh Hoshanna – the Jewish new year – celebrating God making Adam and Eve – and Adam and Eve suffered great tragedy – which reading an excerpt from the Jesus Always book struck me – Adam and Eve lost BOTH their sons that day Cain killed Abel – lost Abel to death and lost Cain to the event of killing his brother – lost…  They eventually had another son – but wow… Stop and know that roses have thorns… since the beginning…

And we have to remember to live – just keep living – plant new roses – smell them – see them – know them…

It was quiet in the colleges and school areas uptown and we ate lunch with Hungarian desserts as a treat – yum…  It is quiet uptown except BUSY at the bakery – and sweet to sit down as my legs whew were sore! I need to walk more! and not to the sweets store! (maybe I should be eating roses like those squirells)

Anyway a blessed day… and a blessed way to celebrate and know NYC… a rose of a city…

Remember September 11th

Amen

The Imperative of Love – September Community

Standard

After watching many September 11th video replays, I thought of my memory of people saying, weeks and months later that “I miss us as a community being September 12th people”… yes, the day after when we were picking up the pieces and each other…

Yes, September 12th 13th 14th… 2001… etc… for the next few weeks and months we looked to each other for comfort, for understanding (which there was and is little in a devastating tragedy like that), and we also looked at the people helping and we became helpers too, in processing and donations. Surely we held our family more dear, we were more somber and polite, and we rallied around and we built and rebuilt community just as the rubble removed from the crash sites, the phoenix rose from the ashes just like the beautiful Oculus metro station, if you’ve been there, it’s gorgeous rising, just as new buildings rose, just as the water pool installations were placed for memorial and a place of reflection. People who don’t know each other gather as community. And those who did know each other came to churches – and rallied each other  – comforted – and asked God “why?” – and stayed in community for a while… solace in sincerity in community…

One of my favorite Mister Rogers’ sayings is that his mother always said: “in the middle of a tragedy, look for the helpers” – and oh yeah, Sept 12th, that brought community – I know somebody who lived on Long Island as a specialized surgeon and yet as any medical professional, they were sent to ground zero to try to help with recovery, but there was nothing they could do. They couldn’t apply their specialized skill set to that situation. However, they could bring us a first hand account of the situation. Then there were chefs, celebrity chefs, who brought their whole restaurant crews and food supply and cooking and continually served the first responders and the workers for months. There were musical celebrities who put together concerts for fundraising. And surely my favorite Bruce Springsteen song called “The Rising” detailed the flight and plight of first responders, firemen rising up the stairs. While everybody else was getting out, and then surely rising up to Heaven as those towers fell. Jesus reached and they rose.

The firefighters did not hesitate, because that was what they did in community. And still live in community and for community.

And that could be our reminder every September to re-start and re-join community.

We do need each other – when Mister Rogers says “look for the helpers” – that could be us – we could be the helpers too. We are to keep the Lord’s commandments and step into this life as His Hands and Feet – and abide in doing what He calls us to do – and listen for the Holy Spirit:  “Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.” 1st John 3:24

So – COMMUNITY – may we continue in community today – and remember that we are not alone here on earth – even if we belong to our heavenly home – we are to be His community here on earth. THE SPIRIT WILL GUIDE US!

Amen

These are the lyrics of part of the song “The Rising”:

Can’t see nothing in front of me
Can’t see nothing coming up behind
Make my way through this darkness
I can’t feel nothing but this chain that binds me
Lost track of how far I’ve gone
How far I’ve gone, how high I’ve climbed
On my back’s a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder, a half-mile line

[Chorus]
Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight

1st John 3:10-24 NKJV

The Imperative of Love
In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.

Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

The Outworking of Love
By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

September 11th Saints and Sinners Alike

Standard

One thing we debate

Is the existence of fate.

.

If life is great, we’ll be great!

If life is bad, hmmm, do we blame it on fate?

.

Maybe we don’t realize

How God sees it in His Eyes.

The brokenness of the world to surmise.

Yet if we just express more LOVE, we show we believe that He, Jesus, rose above the death lies.

.

There has been trouble since Adam and Eve,

And of Cain and Abel, oh how God grieved.

.

It’s a strange system of life and death,

Saints and Sinners alike taking their last breath.

.

Then this September 11th anniversary comes about,

Grief is confusing and frustrating, no doubt.

.

How do we reconcile death from life,

How do we soldier on, in all the strife?

.

Maybe knowing the pain,

We should INSTEAD focus on expressing life’s gain.

.

For death, earthly early death takes away our breath,

But everlasting life is LOVE deeper than surface death.

.

LOVE is the present as it is in the past.

LOVE is the ONLY earthly thing that will last.

.

So let us let our loved ones pass,

And witness especially that we know there must be a path

.

To live with the light of eternal flame,

Bigger wider, deeper than any Olympic game.

.

We will see God’s Hand,

Invitation to His Land.

And oh our forever life will be oh so grand.

.

Love IS the Plan.

.

September 11th, any day, every day, let us shine the light of love beyond the pain.

Remember that tough phrase: “our loss is God’s gain”,

Well at least appreciate that even the shortest or longest time here on earth is but a fraction of life’s melody refrain.

.

Sing HOPE and LOVE over pain.

Sing sorrow, but sing all the same.

God bless everyone who again, today, feels the September 11th pain.

.

Amen

Survive Thrive Be Alive, The September 11th Survivor Tree

Standard

3 years ago I took the metro with my daughter to see the 911 memorial in the World Trade center complex. The new life there was undeniable, activities, people, life. And RESTORATION!

In addition to the Oculus – the new Freedom Tower – the Water Pools – my eyes gained joy in seeing the metal globe reinstalled and especially the “Survivor Tree” – a pear tree still alive, transported for recovery then replaced here at ground zero for living out its days fully – showing resilience and beauty.

Survive Thrive Be Alive

That’s a lesson from God’s grace and mercy and life call. When life knocks us down, we can rise from the crumble, put behind us the stumble, and squash the evil rumble. In God’s Power, Grace and Mercy we shall kneel humble, then in God’s Work we will rise to SHINE and LIVE, in the days He DOES give.

I pray all who passed away that 9-11 day to be given that grace and mercy, allowing God to replenish and replace their wholeness in His embrace.

And as for us still here, let us CONTINUE LIVING in thees seasons, be prepared in and out of season for we are to be PRESENT wherever we are, sharing in the days and moments gifted, and CONTINUE until we FINISH THIS RACE, in Mercy and Grace.

AMEN

“my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace”. Paul in Acts 20:24

Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.” Paul to Timothy, 2ndTim4:2
