There is Good in Good Friday, 31MAR

“We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:6)”

I was spinning my wheels… Friday – Good Friday – first I was in hyperactive overdrive and actually making good traction – I had work work to do – my responsibility to organize my department’s donations for a mega fundraiser – I had a plan,  just barely the time, and with everyone’s help I  powered thru it – whew… FABULOUS… done.

I was still spinning my wheels while shifting the gears of my head, what should i do next? Stay at work at the fundraiser, enjoyable but not sure I could timewise justify my fun when I could go to a local church for Good Friday (since I was an hour from home church), OR take half day vacation and attempt to do a massive errand that could have waited but I was being inpatient but also knew I had this window of time… so i wrapped up my work, knowing I could and would pick up at home later on the laptop and high tailed it out of there… I knew I was rushing, God has convicted me of rushing big time so many times,  but still I dashed…

Shifting gears while you’re still in motion strips those very gears that help give you drive… but off I went…

I justified in my brain all I was doing… but that brain also was bugging me “It’s Good Friday what if they are closed?”… I kept going, but it started bugging me louder in my brain… In half an hour I decided to actually call and guess what? CLOSED. Boom. Plan gone… gear stripped,  wheels spinning and no progress… I had driven halfway to nowhere.

Why Lord? “Lord, You always have a plan for me, where am I supposed to be? Where can I find the good here, I messed up but can you direct me, can you salvage these wasted moments, can you make me understand?”

Sometimes it’s sitting in the car, in the moment that you know you just fell, that God could say something, but He lets you hear the QUIET until you stop spinning your own wheels… His mercy comes when we ask Him for mercy. We ask…

Fittingly, I had just read about Jesus giving mercy. A pagan woman with a demon-possessed daughter engaged Jesus in back and forth discussion. Jesus challenged her with a question and she answered truthfully, wittingly, and with the tone of asking for mercy (Mark 7 scripture lesson of feeding crumbs to the puppies)… Jesus had a forgiving heart healed the girl and told her: “For such a reply, you may go…

ME – I said Lord, I was thinking I was on the right track, please have mercy… I sat at that intersection of the road and my brain quieted down… and I asked God for mercy, for direction, for a glimpse of His plan…

Ok, click click click, let me let God turn my wheels now – and re-engage my active brain – the clock said there’s time on the click to go find a “random” church for Good Friday… at least Lord, I could be a warm body to boost the attendance… YES, put me to Your service somewhere… Google maps… make a plan…

God’s timing, I had to find a rest stop, found it, found there was a screaming child in the shopping cart, the mom doing what she could. I wanted to help, so I found something in my car to give him,  I don’t know if I helped, she showed him – “look at the basketball pictures” – I just felt better that I tried… “the child is screaming Lord, I have to try, is this your plan for me today?”… some time ticked away, I saw him a little calmer – I left…

Mission: find a local cute church not a mega church – find a little church with a BIG spirit… not much to ask huh? So what highway was I on? OH YEAH!!!! Click click click, wow I was ONLY 7 minutes away from one of my former Pastors’ church,  7 minutes huh? Off I went… whew, pulled into a decently full parking lot after not even knowing if they were having a service!  I knew at that moment God had shown me mercy… I hit the door 7 minutes late… sat down to absorb the “7 last words of Christ”… I missed the first word, but swooped in the back sat anonymously and the chimes started right behind my ears and I wept, God is that good!! God continues to show me mercy when “I wing it” – when I go astray – when I ask for mercy. Actually before we were born He set up a plan for each of us to be received into Heaven – the mercy of LIFE in His Love… THERE IS GOOD IN GOOD FRIDAY…

Goosebumps don’t describe realization of mercy – tears flow… tears for the littlest of mercies, big tears and shouts of JOY for the biggest mercy – it’s God’s Good Friday – His plan – His Son to gather back all His Children… I sat and wept that even if I wasn’t supposed to be here, His mercy from our engaged conversation landed me here – safe – from humbled moments to my JOY amplified. I stopped spinning my  wheels, I was there NOT JUST for my joy, NOT JUST for their joy too, but because God tweaks the system and saves the day… we can collectively give Him all the praise… THERE IS GOOD IN GOOD FRIDAY…

Stop spinning the wheels when we realize this is just a normal day for God… When we ask, He knows the plan, He directs the plan… THERE IS GOOD IN GOOD FRIDAY…

Goosebumps for a parishioner when I told her how I “randomly” got there… Encouragement for the sermonists as I was able to tell two of them that their delivery touched my heart. I even got to go to lunch with my blessing of a friend! I got home in time for a big work call – and I got to see my kids for dinner – mercy on a very good Friday…

Unlike the woman with a demon possessed daughter, I was NOT in a grave situation – if anything God told me (again) to slowdown – and He had an opportunity to remind me (again) that when I feel like I’m overstretching and go wrong (again) that it is OK to ask for Mercy, Jesus says: “For such a reply, you may go…”

God floats us… if we stop focusing on the Spirit, we will surely crash… If we hold onto His wing, we will soar…

Fittingly the first Word scripture that I missed 7 minutes late was: “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.” Luke 23:34

Forgive us Father (again) and show us Mercy – Thank You for Jesus!

Jesus saves us – Jesus says “It is finished” – the plan to save us was already placed in our hearts…

Even when we don’t know what we are doing, Jesus intercedes with Our Father… “forgive them”…

THERE IS GOOD IN GOOD FRIDAY…

AMEN

24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

(Mark 7, this scripture detailed in Michael Card’s book helped me a few days prior see Jesus acting with Mercy because the woman engaged in back and forth conversation with a heart of asking forgiveness)
